ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR - Electrical Engineering

University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee

Position Number: 02299230

Introduction (Description of School/College/Dept/Program)
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) is a doctoral/research intensive university and Wisconsin’s premier public urban institution, offering a comprehensive liberal arts, sciences and professional education at the undergraduate and graduate level to its 25,000 students. UWM has earned the highest rating for a research institution from the Carnegie Classification of Institution of Higher Education, often referred to as R1 status. UWM is one of only two R1 institutions in the state of Wisconsin.

The College of Engineering & Applied Science is committed to excellence in teaching and scholarly research and consists of seven departments—Biomedical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The College has approximately 1,750 undergraduate students and 450 graduate students, both Master’s and Doctoral. Greater Milwaukee, the third-ranked manufacturing center in the United States, is home to 400+ engineering firms and 1300+ manufacturing firms with annual receipts of 24 billion dollars. The College has a long history of industrial collaboration and research support. More information about the College can be found at http://uwm.edu/engineering/

The College of Engineering & Applied Science invites applications for a new faculty Associate Professor position in the Electrical Engineering department. The college is seeking an exceptional individual with leadership capability and industry experience to continue the expansion of our research and further strengthen our portfolio and curricula in the areas of power electronics, electric machines, power systems, and related areas in the field of power engineering. In order to complement the current strengths of the department, a strong candidate will demonstrate primary interest in power electronics, electric machines, motor drives, grid-interfacing power converters and transportation electrification. Candidates whose research encompasses the integration of medium voltage, MW-scale power electronic conversion systems with energy storage systems and energy storage management, integration into applications with demanding power density, efficiency, insulation system reliability and electromagnetic inter-compatibility are especially encouraged to apply. In short, candidates are being sought who are able to address the challenging convergence of the Electrical Engineering sub-disciplines of power, power electronics, high voltage and electromagnetics engineering.

Job Summary
The successful candidate would conduct independent research, teach Electrical Engineering courses as needed, collaborate with CEAS faculty with existing research and grant development, assist with Electrical Engineering curricular development, and build up highly effective research teams consisting of PhD candidates, M.S. students, undergraduate researchers and post-docs. Candidates should expect to share leadership duties over two research centers: the Center for Sustainable Electrical Energy Systems (SEES) and the UWM site for Center for Grid Connected Advanced Power Electronic Systems (GRAPES). The latter, GRAPES, is multi-university, partially funded by the Industry/University Cooperative Research Center program of the National Science Foundation entering Phase III. Only candidates those who show commitment to sustaining relationships with current industry partners and growing GRAPES site during its Phase II transition, through the addition of new industry partners, will be considered for this position. Core missions of both SEES and GRAPES improving energy security of installations and advancing the integration of enabling power electronic technologies into systems. Both centers have a strong hardware focus, providing students with the opportunity to gain hands on experience in the design at the component, assembly and systems level. SEES incorporates an onsite microgrid installation into lab functionality and research growth in the areas of direct connection of power electronics into medium voltage systems. SEES also closely aligns it research with economic development and growth in the Midwest Energy, Power, and Controls industry cluster, and closely collaborates utility providers and manufacturers in the greater Milwaukee area.
