Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Financial:
- Interpret data to determine past financial performance and/or to project a financial probability for users who must make economic or business decisions.
- Develop complex financial reports for forecasting, trending and results analysis.
- Develop and oversee the maintenance of account budget monitoring systems.
- Monitor, identify and communicate over-expenditures to faculty and administrative staff. Recommend actions and resolve funding shortfalls.
- Recommend budget adjustments, and other cost improvements measures.
- Keep abreast of laws and regulations, and apply them in order to maintain up-to-date compliance with all sponsored and non-sponsored accounts.
- Identify high-risk subrecipients and maintain compliance with the subrecipient monitoring policies and procedures.
- Oversee the procurement process for all assigned accounts. This includes approving procurement cards transactions (by the monthly deadline) and travel reimbursements, while reviewing account balances prior to order submission.
- Provides and assists with the training on policies and procedures.
- Leads various special projects and resources for initiatives, as assigned.May direct the activities of staff or a function, and represent the function at meetings.
Financial Analysis:
-
Extract financial data from various accounting and information
systems and perform complex statistical, financial and cost
accounting analysis of data.
Perform in-depth analysis on budget performance, investigate
variances, provide justification, and communicate to leadership as
requested.
Assist in researching expense and volume
variances.
Seek to resolve any expense posting errors and communicate proper
expense allocation as needed.
Complete monthly reconciliation for the department accounts and
analyze budget patterns and project
expenditures.
Financial Reporting:

Assist management in updating/preparing departmental dashboard and
executive summary.
Develop reports for forecasting, trending, and results
analysis.
Generate and distribute monthly reports, and create new reports and
templates to improve monitoring of revenues/expenses within the
department.
Prepare, assemble, manipulate, and/or format data files, ad-hoc
reports and briefing presentations, using SAP and various software
applications and financial tools.
Ensure expenditures for budgets are monitored and reports are
prepared to maintain balanced accounts.
Work requires analytical competency in order to gather and
interpret data, as well as proficiency with financial reporting
systems to build reports.
Grant
Management:
- Manage post-award process including but not limited to allocation of budgets, coordinating the timely and accurate set up of payroll per grant guidelines, processing journal entries and cost transfers as needed, reconciling reports, research related payroll and financial data.
- Produce specialized sponsored research/project financial reports utilizing institutional and/or departmental systems).
- Provide guidance and oversight so that grant/contract funds remain in compliance with University and award/contractual guidelines, including recommendations to ensure all sponsored awards are reconciled and balanced without a surplus or deficient balance.
- Key contact for Shared Services Sponsored Projects as part of the grant/contract fiscal reporting processes, including the grant/contract closeout and Financial Status Reporting process.
- Key contributor in the annual budgeting process by providing research salary and support information.
- Generate monthly, periodic and/or ad-hoc financial reports to conduct financial review meetings with Faculty. This includes control salary, faculty sponsored salary, sponsored deficit report, and unbilled sponsored revenue reports – acting as necessary to resolve any issues.
- Ensure proper management of all sponsored awards, by insuring all financial transactions agree with GAAP, NIH Grants Policy Statement, FDP, OMB, CAS, and University policies.
- Timely review of effort reports and payroll prior to release to Faculty for signoff.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
-
Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, or other related field
required.
Five years progressively responsible related financial
analysis/accounting experience required.
Additional education may substitute for required experience and
additional related experience may substitute for required
education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency
formula.

Work experience in a research, academic or university environment,
and strong knowledge of SAP is preferred.
Proficiency in COEUS and JAWS/SWIFT.
-
Applicant should also have collaborative working style with
excellent consultative, project management, analytic, problem
solving, and presentation skills.
Demonstrated skills in quantitative financial analysis, including
the development of financial models used to forecast financial
results under different scenarios and manage financial
performance.
Must have strong knowledge and skills in Microsoft
Excel.
Well-developed written and verbal communication
skills.
Must be well organized, flexible, and able to independently manage
multiple challenging projects simultaneously in a fast-paced work
setting.
Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with people at
all levels of the organization.
Working knowledge of general accounting principles and practices
required in the preparation of complex and detailed financial and
budgetary analyses in order to address a variety of financial
issues/problems.
Demonstrated ability to lead projects and teams, and formulate and
implement standards and procedures to ensure compliance with
financial policies.

with experience)
