Job Description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The Advisor I, TRIO Educational Talent Search is responsible for providing college preparatory support services to low-income and first-generation high school and intermediate school students. Provides academic and college preparatory advising and workshops to students discussing the topics of academic success, personal development, financial aid, financial literacy, and career exploration and preparation. This is a temporary, grant-funded position. Continuation of the position from one academic year to the next is dependent upon continued grant funding.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Advise and assist students with the college-going process including college & career research, college applications, FAFSA applications, SAT/ACT prep & registrations
  2. Conduct student intake and need assessments to customize services for each participant
  3. Assess what the students’ strengths and interests are and collaborate with the student in utilizing those strengths and interests to develop and reach their goals
  4. Monitor and track TRIO Educational Talent Search student progress
  5. Develop engaging content and presentations for student workshops
  6. Conduct academic, financial aid, college preparatory and personal development workshops
  7. Coordinate and chaperone college/university campus visits and cultural field trips and events
  8. Recruit students and process applications for the TRIO Educational Talent Search program at assigned school campuses
  9. Research and maintain up to date knowledge of academic programs, college admissions process, financial aid process, assessments, and academic advising strategies
  10. Responsible for other reasonable related duties as assigned

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:
  • Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment
  • Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
  • Work is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 1 year of related work experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in education, psychology, counseling, social work or a related field
  • Prior experience with case management or advising TRIO Educational Talent Search students or similar programs preferred
Salary

Hiring salary range is $37,270-$42,861

Lone Star College provides a hiring salary range for all posted full-time non-faculty positions. Where your salary offer would fall in that range is determined by your related experience and education. Should you receive an offer of employment from Lone Star College, the resume submitted in the application process will be utilized to calculate your salary offer.
