Job Summary

The Chaiken Laboratory at Drexel University seeks a Research Assistant, with strong hands-on experience in protein chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology, to support a research program that investigates molecular and structural mechanisms and antagonism of the envelope protein complexes of HIV-1 and SARS-CoV-2. Our Group has recently discovered molecular strategies to irreversibly inactivate Env and functionally kill both the virus and virus-expressing cells. The Research Assistant will integrate into and be part of the Laboratory's broad-based research environment that encompasses identification of recombinant and synthetic antagonists, and the use of chemical and molecular biology, biophysical methods and physical virology approaches to drive investigations of structure-based antagonism of Env. The position will include helping to produce and utilize synthetic peptides, recombinant proteins and pseudoviruses, and their site-directed variants, and analyses of the sensitivity of Env to inactivators and antagonists using molecular, biophysical, and cell-based functional analyses.

Essential Functions
  • Recombinant protein purification (mammalian and bacterial expression, FPLC, affinity purification)
  • Molecular Biology (PCR, cloning, site-directed mutagenesis, DNA isolation)

  • Tissue culture (cell lines / primary cells)
  • Purification and characterization of recombinant viruses
  • Preparation, chromatographic purification, and characterization of synthetic peptide-based inhibitors
