The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine is hiring a full-time Research Specialist II who will provide laboratory support and to assist with research coordination for multiple research studies related to neurodegenerative disorders.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Participate in developing assays and protocols for PI’s approval, and designs experimental approaches for research projects.
  • Performs a range of sophisticated assays, and makes significant/important contributions to various aspects of the research effort.
  • The individual will be involved in, but not limited to, key laboratory duties, such as handling human biospecimens, biospecimen collection and processing, biospecimen inventory and management, ELISAs, Western Blot, and DNA extraction.
  • Clinic duties include neuropsychological testing and other patient testing. Additional duties include data entry, cleaning of glassware, and/or other laboratory housekeeping tasks.
  • This position also involves being on-call for laboratory emergencies in a rotating schedule especially for power and freezer outages.
  • Independently process and deliver presentations of scientific data for colleagues as well as conferences via poster and seminars with approval of PI.
  • Manage and make purchases of basic laboratory supplies and specific project necessities and maintain necessary lab inventory.
  • Perform necessary administrative tasks such as but not limited to grant progress reports and Fed-Ex account upkeep.
  • Educate, train, and supervise undergraduate students that assist in sample collection and processing.
  • Meet weekly with PI and colleagues to review lab data, troubleshoot problems, prioritize tasks, and discuss newly published scientific literature relevant to the neurodegenerative disorders field.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • B.S. Degree in Sciences/ Biology or a related field required.
  • Two (2) years of laboratory experience performing relevant techniques required.
  • Master's Degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*

JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

** Applicants who do not meet the posted requirements but are completing their final academic semester/quarter will be considered eligible for employment and may be asked to provide additional information confirming their academic completion date.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s in Sciences/Biology

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Proficiency with ELISA’s and Western blots.
  • Phlebotomy skills would be preferred or should be willing to learn.
