ABOUT GOUCHER COLLEGE:

Named one of the top 10 most innovative colleges in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, and recognized as one of the forty Colleges that Changes Lives, Goucher College, located in Baltimore, Maryland, is a private, coed, liberal arts college dedicated to teaching students to be complex problem solvers prepared for the jobs of the future. A Goucher education focuses on creating lifelong learners through an interdisciplinary, experiential approach.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Center for Natural Sciences at Goucher College invites applications for a joint tenure-track faculty position in Biological Sciences and Chemistry starting in the Fall of 2022.  The Biological Sciences and Chemistry programs aim to provide a broad training for our students who pursue teaching, non-profit, research, health, and other science careers. We recently redesigned our introductory biology and chemistry courses by employing best practices that have been shown to engage and retain students, particularly students from first-generation or under-represented minority backgrounds including studio models of lab courses and expanding our course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs).  Goucher's Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major is accredited by the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. We have a robust internally funded summer research program that allows for significant mentoring opportunities for undergraduate students in our research labs.

The ideal candidate will be broadly trained in biochemistry with a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field.  Teaching responsibilities will vary depending on the candidate's expertise and could include courses in chemistry such as general chemistry, analytical, medicinal, or biochemistry, and courses in biology such as general biology, bioinformatics, molecular biology, and upper-level seminars.  Further teaching may include courses in our nationally recognized post-baccalaureate premedical program. Goucher College endeavors to be a model teaching and learning community where faculty and students are engaged with one another in learning both inside and outside of the traditional classroom.  Application materials should clearly articulate the candidate's interest in teaching at a small liberal arts institution and commitment to the use of engaged pedagogies that support equity and success for students from diverse backgrounds.

This endowed professorship is supported by a grant from the Maryland Department of Commerce through the E-Nnovation Initiative Fund. This grant promotes the establishment of external research partnerships at organizations such as federal laboratories, companies, or other institutions of higher education. Applicants should address this in their research statement by discussing collaborations of an entrepreneurial spirit that they envision with local organizations and external partners.  More information about the Maryland E-Nnovation Initiative Fund can be found here: https://commerce.maryland.gov/fund/maryland-e-nnovation-initiative-fund-(meif). Ongoing scholarly research and service to the College are expected. Candidates must have a clearly articulated research program at the interface of biology and chemistry that emphasizes undergraduate research opportunities.

REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. by the start date of August 2022. Postdoctoral work and teaching experience and/or professional development activities related to teaching are preferred.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Goucher College is committed to increasing the diversity of our community and seeks applicants dedicated to applying principles of equity and inclusion in all areas of the campus community
