Position Title Post-Doctoral Researcher- Mechanical Engineering The Opportunity

The Mechanical Engineering Department at the Colorado School of Mines invites applications from qualified candidates for a Post-Doctoral Researcher to work primarily with Professor Carl Frick beginning Spring 2022. The overarching focus of this position will be to conceptualize, fabricate, experimentally characterize and mechanically evaluate composites using carbon-based reinforcement derived from coal. This is a full-time, benefitted position with an estimated term of between 1-2 years, as funding allows.

Responsibilities
  • Perform surface characterization and manipulation of various carbon-based particles, ranging from mm to sub-micron in size
  • Effectively utilize carbon-based engineered products as reinforcement for a variety of matrix materials ranging from polymers to ceramics, in order to improve material properties
  • Strong aptitude for written and verbal communication
  • Supporting peripheral research projects related to materials characterization and mechanical testing.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in mechanical or chemical engineering or related field
  • Demonstrated experience with material characterization techniques and mechanical testing
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience researching carbon-based materials
  • Experience with composites formulation, fabrication and experimental testing
  • Professional experience working with or in industry
  • Demonstrated effectiveness working with a team on a multi-faceted research project
  • Proven track record of research dissemination such as journal publications, patents, and/or conference presentations
  • Familiarity and demonstrated ability to capture grants and awards for funding research and technology development

Pay Range

$50,000 - $63,000

Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
