Amherst College invites applications for the Graphic Designer position. Do you love building visual solutions for a wide variety of communications challenges? We're seeking a Graphic Designer, who will join our team of over 20 creative professionals in the Office of Communications to craft design solutions primarily for print but could also include designs for social, web, digital screens, email newsletters, and event promotion. We're looking for someone who is creative, meticulous, and has strong organizational and communication skills, as well as the ability to function efficiently in a fast-paced environment. (This position is eligible for the College's hybrid work schedule, and during the pilot period, work can be done either full-time on-campus or as a hybrid schedule with some work completed remotely in Massachusetts and some work completed on-campus.)

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

Technical & Creative: - Meeting with campus clients to discuss graphic design projects, make recommendations, and develop plans to guide each project is a regular part of this position. You will also review and approve designs developed both in-house and by outside contractors, including requests for posters, brochures, postcards, and booklets, as well as requests for College-branded athletic gear, and requests from the general Amherst community. We'll also expect you to conduct background research on projects, implement design ideas, review paper choices, resolve specifics of photography/art needs, decide on printing methods, and prepare job specifications for estimates from various freelancers and vendors. We are looking for a Visual Identity Toolkit (VIT) advocate and champion, someone who will promote awareness and accurate usage of the VIT in order to maintain visual consistency across projects and platforms. As a member of the 5-person Digital Team, you will collaborate on selecting appropriate artwork and photos for projects such as the annual calendar, exhibits, and slideshows. And we know that staying up-to-date with developments in design, typography, and print production keeps you up at night! Being conversant and comfortable moving between print and digital channels as needed is also important to us.

Administrative: Manages Amherst's College licensing requests Participates in the maintenance and use of our Digital Asset Management system. Tracks and coordinates the logistics of print production, billing, and distribution. Collaborates regularly with Amherst's Campus Print & Mail Center Participates in departmental strategy and working meetings.

Qualifications
Required:
  • Bachelor's Degree. (In lieu of a degree, 7 years of relevant work experience.)
  • 5 years of directly relevant design work experience
  • Highly knowledgeable in print design and production, and visual identity systems
  • Experience crafting digital graphics
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications skill
  • Proficiency in Adobe suite of design tools or equivalent applications
  • Flexibility and strong problem-solving skills
  • A customer service orientation
  • Occasionally requires work in the evenings or on weekends

Preferred:
  • Degree in communications, design, art, graphic design, fine art, or other relevant field
  • Experience working in higher education
  • Experience working with digital graphics
  • Experience in any of the following is a bonus: photography, videography, writing, social media, multimedia design, or other applicable skills.
