Position Primary Purpose and General Duties:

The Department of Pediatrics/Division of Infectious Disease is hiring a postdoctoral fellow to conduct independent basic science research supported by an NIH R01 grant. The postdoctoral fellow will conduct in vitro/cell culture-based experiments to define the molecular mechanisms of cytomegalovirus temperance factor restrictions to viral replication. This position will work under the supervision of the PI, Dr. Michael McVoy. The PI and fellow will collaboratively make an Individualized Development Plan to help guide the training goals and benchmarks to achieve these via experiences provided by these investigations, as well as nurturing the fellow’s own independent line of related research. This is a 1 year position, with the potential for a 2nd year based on progress and availability of funding. This position is contingent upon grant funding.

Minimum Hiring Standards:

Doctoral degree in molecular virology.
Experience propagating human cell lines in vitro, including fibroblast and retinal pigment epithelial cells.
Experience propagating and titrating viral stocks.
Experience designing and constructing viral mutants using bacterial artificial chromosome recombineering techniques in E. coli.
Experience characterizing viral mutants through growth curves, focus formation assays, immunofluorescence, western blotting, qPCR, qRT-PCR, and DNA sequencing.
Evidence of independence in design, execution, and interpretation of molecular virology experiments.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including grant and manuscript preparation.
Excellent organization, time management, and critical thinking skills.
Ability to work independently and with others in the laboratory environment.

Preferred Hiring Standards :

Experience conducting cell culture-based experiments with cytomegalovirus.
Working knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, EndNote, ImageJ, MacVector, and Prism software.
