Job Summary
The Information Technology Specialist is a professional position with responsibility for designated technologies and services within the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, the AU College of Agriculture, and the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station ( ACES -Ag). As a member of the ACES -Ag IT Unit, this Specialist will, under limited supervision of the Associate Director for ACES -Ag IT, use discretion and judgment to create and manage databases and web applications to meet administrative, programmatic, and educational needs.
Essential Functions
Essential functions include, but are not limited to: 1) Design, develop, and maintain custom WordPress features and plugins; 2) design, develop, and maintain PHP web-integrated applications; 3) Manage ACES -Ag WordPress web server infrastructure; 4) implement Auburn University cyber security standards and initiatives for managed PHP web-integrated applications; 5) consult with faculty, staff, and administrators to determine project requirements and goals; 6) advise faculty, staff, and administrators regarding options for in-house development vs. commercial solutions; 7) consult with supervisor and clients to prioritize projects appropriately; 8) coordinate with other IT specialists to ensure that appropriate development standards are followed; 9) participate in developing and implementing a strategic vision for meeting organizational WordPress and application needs; 10) identify emerging trends in WordPress and application development and make appropriate recommendations; and 11) may conduct in-service training. The Specialist also provides expert advice, assistance, and guidance to management and lower-level IT specialists. Work assignments may have established deadlines and require periods of “on-call” support responsibilities.

The Specialist IV position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and five (5) or more years’ experience designing, developing, and maintaining custom WordPress features and plugins, relational databases, and web-based applications. Typical salaries for Level IV range from $55,000 to $65,000.
The Specialist V position requires a Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited institution and four (4) or more years’ experience designing, developing, and maintaining custom WordPress features and plugins, relational databases, and web-based applications. Typical salaries for Level V range between $63,000 and $75,000.
The Specialist VI position requires a Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited institution and seven (7) or more years’ experience designing, developing, and maintaining custom WordPress features and plugins, relational databases, and web-based applications. Typical salaries for Level VI range between $73,000 and $86,000.

Minimum Skills and Abilities
Candidates for this position must have demonstrated experience and success working both in a collaborative team environment and independently. This position requires excellent interpersonal communication skills along with demonstrated technical excellence. Candidates must also be skilled at organizing, prioritizing, and managing multiple concurrent tasks.
Minimum Technology Skills
Extensive development experience with the following applications and tools is required: Linux, Shell scripting, WordPress, PHP, JavaScript and relational databases such as MySQL. Experience administering, updating, and securing Linux servers is also required.
Minimum License and Certifications
Desired Qualifications
Desired qualifications include a degree from an accredited institution in Computer Science/Engineering or MIS . Other desired qualifications include: knowledge of Perl, Java, CGI, or other web-related programming languages; XML ; CSS ; web syndication; MS Office; Ansible; and experience with the Apache web server. Experience working in the Land Grant University System is also desirable.
