St. John’s University seeks an innovative and collaborative leader to serve as the next Dean of St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (SJC), and the university has extended the search. The Dean promotes greater collaboration across the University and elevates the College’s external visibility as a voice in the national dialogue arguing for the importance of a liberal arts education.

In 2020, St. John’s University celebrated 150 years of contributing to the betterment of the lives of its students and the communities it serves. One of the nation’s most diverse higher education institutions, headquartered in the most pluralistic borough in the world’s most important financial center, St. John’s is one of the top 40 universities in the nation for social mobility, according to U.S. News & World Report.

In early 2021, the University welcomed Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., S.T.L., Ph.D., as its 18th President. Building upon recent success, Fr. Shanley joined the University at a time when it is well-positioned to play a role in the critical social movements emerging across society, and at a time of tremendous institutional momentum.

Founded in 1870, St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is the oldest division at St. John’s University. SJC offers three undergraduate degrees and students can choose from 32 majors. They can also supplement their undergraduate experience from 40 minors across the fine arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and mathematics. The Graduate Division of St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers master’s and doctoral degrees in 32 fields. SJC also offers dual-degree programs in business, law and education; combined undergraduate and graduate programs; certificate programs in multidisciplinary fields.

As a senior academic leader, the next Dean of St. John’s College will serve as an effective advocate for the College within the University, and will act as the College’s chief executive and intellectual leader. This person will build upon SJC’s rich history to articulate and advance a compelling and innovative vision for the College’s future that centers on the following: recruiting, developing, and retaining diverse and exceptional faculty, administrators, and staff; strengthening faculty and student focus on research; and advancing the University’s antiracism initiatives to further develop a culture of inclusion and belonging.

The next Dean will have demonstrated success as a leader, teacher and scholar who has developed and executed academic strategies at a complex, comprehensive university. This individual will have earned a terminal degree in a discipline within St. John’s College and possess a record of scholarly achievement commensurate with appointment at the rank of Professor. Also essential to the role are strong communication skills, a vision for teaching and research in the liberal arts and sciences, a strong commitment to Catholic higher education, and an enthusiasm for the Vincentian mission of St. John’s.
