The Department of Leadership and Counseling is looking for a Department Head who can lead us in carrying out our mission:

 

The Leadership and Counseling Department develops caring and ethical educational leaders and professional counselors, through co-constructed teaching and learning experiences, respectful service and community engagement, and intentional research and inquiry to promote equity. We prepare courageous leaders and mental health practitioners to assume prominent roles in effecting positive change in clients, students, families, and communities in local and global context.

 

Eastern Michigan University is one of the largest producers of educators in the United States. Located in Ypsilanti, adjacent to Ann Arbor, and 45 minutes from downtown Detroit, the Leadership and Counseling Department within the College of Education offers CACREP accredited master’s programs in clinical mental health, college, and school counseling; and master’s, specialist, and doctoral programs (PhD) in higher education and K-12 educational leadership.

 

The department has a vibrant and diverse faculty with a long tradition of excellence and innovation, and a commitment to centering equity and social justice in our work. The Department Head, in collaboration with the faculty, provides strategic leadership of personnel, financial, and operational activities, and ensures success through the development and direction of the academic department.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Facilitate the vision of the department, support the faculty, and act as a steward for students, using data, information, and research, in alignment with college and university goals.
  • Facilitate and provide resource support for various program accreditation (i.e., national or state level) or program approvals.
  • Prepare and monitor, with faculty input, departmental budget for personnel services, supplies, maintenance and equipment, and other grants and contracts. 
  • Provide departmental leadership in the development of new initiatives and programs, and the revision of existing ones. 
  • Evaluate faculty performance for tenure, promotion, and supplemental salary adjustment recommendations to the Dean of the College. 
  • Collaborate with the faculty in administration of the department (i.e., scheduling departmental course offerings, recruiting and interviewing prospective faculty, managing department resources).
  • Support students and faculty regarding such matters as curricular requirements, transfer of courses, availability of classes, and academic problems and/or grievances. 
  • Participate in local, regional, and national professional associations to continue personal academic development and promote the university. 
  • Establish and maintain public relations activities with governmental, educational, civic, and community agencies. 
  • Cultivate alumni and other donor connections for the financial support of departmental projects and programs. 
  • Administer collective bargaining master agreements. 
  • Perform related departmental duties as required.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to achieving excellence through diversity and inclusion, and experience with diverse populations and underrepresented students
  • An earned doctorate in Educational Leadership, Counselor Education & Supervision, or closely related field from an accredited institution
  • An outstanding record of teaching, scholarship, and service that would merit appointment and tenure as full professor
  • At least two years experience in a leadership role aligned with academic administration (e.g., program director, associate department chair/head, department chair/head) or related experience
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to address the challenges of both Leadership and Counseling programs

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience in administration of a doctoral program
  • Chairing or serving on dissertation committees
  • Demonstrated success in grant writing, fundraising, donor cultivation, and/or stewardship
  • Experience mentoring both new and developing faculty members
  • Experience working and administering across interdisciplinary contexts.
  • Experience in online education, including both synchronous and asynchronous platforms.
  • Evidence of success in developing constructive relations with entities external to the university

 

The successful candidate will serve a twelve month appointment. A competitive salary will be based on qualifications and prior experience with a tenure track appointment at the full professor rank.  Starting date should be no later than August 29, 2022.
