Job Summary

The individual in this position serves as the main receptionist for the Agricultural Economics & Rural Sociology Department and as the secretary for the Department Chair.

Essential Functions

Duties include, but are not limited to: answering the phone; receiving, greeting, and directing visitors and students; providing general information to the public; coordinating shipping, mail, and other delivery services for the department; scheduling appointments for the department chair and maintaining the chair’s calendar; travel arrangements and scheduling for department faculty interviews and other visitors; scheduling the use and maintenance of departmental vehicles and class/conference rooms; serving as the liaison with Facilities for building access, repairs, and maintenance; ordering and surplusing furniture; maintaining departmental data using spreadsheets and data bases; assisting with meeting and workshop arrangements; maintaining office supply inventory and ordering office supplies; liaison with IT for the ordering and surplusing of department computers; act as department liaison with IT for department computer repairs; performing a variety of routine clerical and administrative tasks for faculty and staff; assisting graduate students with course registration; assisting undergraduate student clubs with meeting and travel arrangements; serving as a member of a team providing support services and information; provide backup for other staff member when sick or on vacation; and performing other duties as assigned. The successful candidate must have excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills and have demonstrated ability to multi-task, set priorities, meet deadlines, and work both independently and as part of a team. Candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States by the start date and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment.

Desired Qualifications

Desired qualifications include: knowledge and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, WordPerfect, Adobe, Access, e-mail, Internet, etc.; experience and knowledge of desktop publishing, website maintenance, graphic arts, and/or database management. Familiarity with Auburn University administrative and financial policies, procedures and the AU Banner system is also desired. Other desired skills are knowledge of various office equipment and ability to work with a diverse group of people.
