Position Summary

The Department of Music at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, invites applications from music theorists for the position of Clinical Assistant Professor beginning fall 2022.

The successful candidate’s primary responsibilities for this non-tenure track position will be to teach courses for undergraduate majors and non-majors. While the position has no requirements for research and minimal service expectations, the successful candidate is invited to perform, collaborate, and otherwise contribute to the creativity of our department, which offers performance and academic degrees for undergraduates and graduates in composition, historical musicology, performance, and music theory. The ideal applicant will have a PhD in music theory by time of appointment and a demonstrated record of teaching experience, though strong ABD applicants will be considered.

The initial appointment for this academic-year position will be for two years, and future reappointment will be based on performance, available funding, and College need. The salary will be competitive, in line with qualifications and experience.

The position carries a 4+4 teaching load with principal courses that potentially include: core written theory and aural skills; advanced undergraduate courses in counterpoint or analysis, music theory courses for non-majors; and courses from our department’s general education offerings, possibly including a freshman seminar. In addition, the successful candidate may also be asked to teach a graduate seminar in music theory. All final course assignment decisions rest with the chair of Music, and are subject to change.

There will be teaching assistant support for this position, and thus the successful candidate will demonstrate clear evidence of excellent organizational and mentoring skills. With recent events having shown that the immediate future may necessitate faculty being able to move quickly and efficiently into online teaching, remote teaching experience will be considered a valuable asset. Further, because many of the assigned courses may be described as “gateway courses” to the Music Department majors and minors, we are searching for a teacher that possesses a contagious enthusiasm for teaching and recruiting student into Music.

University at Buffalo is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer and, in keeping with our commitment, welcomes all to apply including veterans and individuals with disabilities.
