Position Summary

The State University of New York at Buffalo is seeking an Associate Vice President for Finance and Business Operations who will report to the Vice President for Health Sciences / Dean of the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences ( VPHS /Dean) and is a member of the VPHS senior leadership team. The Associate Vice President works closely with the VPHS and the deans of the health sciences schools in support of the VPHS strategies and initiatives. The Associate Vice President works collaboratively with the unit business officers, human resources partners, unit diversity officers, and facility operation administrators of the health sciences schools to design and implement cross-school shared services and to implement financial models, processes, systems, and funds flow in support of VPHS strategies. The Associate Vice President ensures coordination, accountability and integrated implementation of university-wide policies, enterprise systems, risk management strategies, and business compliance activities across the health sciences schools.

The Associate Vice President is the principal liaison of financial planning and information between the Office of the Vice President for Health Sciences/Dean and UBMD practice plans, affiliated health care partners, the health sciences schools including: The Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences ( JSBMS ), School of Nursing, School of Pharmacy, School of Public Health, and the School of Dental Medicine, the university’s central University financial offices, and other University organizational units (Human Resources, University Facilities, etc.).

The Associate Vice President serves as the strategic partner for the Health Science schools providing leadership over the budget and financial management, staffing, operations, stewardship and school accreditation management teams. The Associate Vice President creates a vision and strategy that aligns with the VPHS, Dean’s and University’s goals that drives decision-making and problem resolution within the schools.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Strategic business partner for budget and financial management. In this role, the Associate Vice President leads the budget administration for VPHS and JSMBS and is responsible for advancing financial and operational strategies; reporting, interpreting, and communicating accurate financial results; establishing and monitoring compliance with operational and capital budgets; serving as the primary risk manager and financial advisor; overseeing the implementation and effectiveness of financial, information, and other control systems; ensuring compliance with contractual financial obligations; integrating and implementing financial strategies into organizational initiatives; and forecasting future revenue and expenditures to minimize financial risks.
  • Strategic business partner provides oversight of the HR, Facilities and Operations Administration management teams. In this role, the Associate Vice President is responsible for planning and influencing HR activities in Health Sciences including oversight of the workforce planning, recruiting new talent, performance management, compensation planning and development of employees and teams. As the facilities and operations administrator, the Associate Vice President oversees the management teams responsible for the rehabs, moves and facilities, space inventory and assignment.
  • Key member of the Senior Management team. In this role, the Associate Vice President is the central point of contact representing the VPHS / Dean’s initiatives and plans to both the University centralized services as well as departments within the School. Using expertise in organizational engagement, the Associate Vice President collaborates and builds consensus with departments on Health Science’s direction and approach, participates in strategic thinking and long term planning initiatives, and interacts with the University’s centralized services to ensure the Schools’ and University’s vision are practiced and in alignment. In collaboration with the VPHS /Dean, regularly review requirements for accreditation to ensure continued compliance and accreditation for the Schools.

Minimum Qualifications

We are particularly looking for candidates who can operate effectively in a diverse community of faculty and staff and share our vision of helping all constituents reach their full potential. Successful candidates will have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution. Five years of progressively responsible experience managing and administering a successful business services program in a complex and distributed organization. Demonstrated experience leading change, promoting a diverse workforce, designing business systems, processes and reporting tools and engaging employees and customers in these activities is required.

Preferred Qualifications

A master’s degree and/or CPA is preferred.
