POSITION DETAILS:

Sacramento State seeks a new colleague for a full-time tenure-track position in music theory and composition beginning in August 2022. The successful candidate will contribute fresh pedagogical perspectives to an evolving, innovative curriculum that engages a diverse spectrum of music from around the world; will serve undergraduate and graduate students as a progressive, creative, collaborative, and well-rounded educator; and will be able to teach a wide range of academic courses and applied composition lessons.


JOB DUTIES:

• Develop and teach any of the following courses, based on the candidate's qualifications: Music Technology; Elements of Music; Music Theory I, II, and III; Musicianship I, II, and III; Beginning Composition; Instrumentation and Arranging; Contemporary Music Theory and Musicianship; Pedagogy of Music Theory and Musicianship; Counterpoint; Graduate Music Theory; Graduate Music Theory Seminar.
  
• Teach applied composition lessons.
  
• Establish or maintain an active career as a composer in any style or medium, with recognition at the national level.
  
• Recruit in cooperation with colleagues.
  
• Serve on School of Music committees.
  
  REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  
  
• Earned master's degree in music by the time of appointment.
  
• Strong background as a creative pedagogue with demonstrable potential to teach successfully at the collegiate level.
  
• Evidence of potential to become a successful composer at the national level.
  
• Ability to work with a diverse student population and to embrace cultural diversity in their work.
  
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues.
  
• Willingness to serve on School of Music and University committees.
  
  PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  
  
• Earned doctorate in music by the time of appointment.
  
• Experience as an innovative and skilled instructor of record at the collegiate level.
  
• Established record as a successful composer at the national level.
  
• Evidence of ability to teach analysis and performance of a broad spectrum of genres, including contemporary, vernacular, and/or non-Western music.
  
• Experience with and ability to teach the artistic use of music technology.
  
• Evidence of ability to teach composition and improvisation in the classroom.
  
• Evidence of ability and interest in student recruitment and community outreach.
