Description: Per course adjunct faculty for the Single Subject Teaching Credential program's course, SSTE 274-01/174-01.

Qualifications:

This course is designed to prepare teacher candidates with the knowledge and skills to effectively organize and implement instruction for students with diverse backgrounds and with diverse learning needs, including English learners and students with special needs. This course will examine federal and state laws that regulate programs and services for English Learners and students with special needs, including students with disabilities and gifted and talented. Candidates will demonstrate skills in the use of differentiated instructional strategies that ensure that all students have access and achievement in relation to the academic content standards. Candidates will demonstrate the ability to create a positive, inclusive climate of instruction for all students in the general education classroom.

English Learner Module Competencies:

Candidates will be able to:
  • Identify school-based organizational structures designed to meet the needs of English learners. (CTC 13a)
  • Interpret and understand CELDT and other assessments for English Learners (CTC 13g)
  • Select methods, strategies, and materials related to instruction for English learners. (CTC 13b,f)
  • Examine the federal and state laws that regulate student placement in programs designed for English learners. (CTC 13c)
  • Describe the impact of first language literacy on the development of a second language. (CTC 13d)
  • Understand the role and services provided by specialists and paraprofessionals. (CTC 13e)
  • Identify strategies related to the management of first- and second-language development. (CTC 13d)
  • Implement strategies that facilitate the assimilation of grade-appropriate content curriculum to English learners. (CTC 13e,f)
  • Organize and manage a classroom environment that includes diverse students. (CTC 13e)

SpEd Module Competencies:

Candidates will be able to:

  • Identify school-based organizational structures designed to meet the needs of students with exceptional needs and be familiar with common Multi-Tiered Systems of Intervention and Support (MTSS) in local districts.

  • Interpret and understand assessments commonly used to identify needs and monitor progress on goals in every level of an MTSS.

  • Select methods, strategies, and materials related to instruction for students with exceptional need.

  • Examine the federal and state laws that regulate student placement in programs.

  • Understand the role and services provided by specialists and paraprofessionals. (CTC 13e)

  • Organize and manage a classroom environment that includes diverse students. (CTC 13e)

Requirements to teach this course:
  • At least four years experience teaching in a Title I secondary public school with majority students of color within the past 10 years. Subject area of expertise/credential should be specified in the resumé.
  • Experience teaching and utilizing the latest research-based strategies in critical pedagogy, culturally sustaining pedagogy, and/or funds of knowledge/community cultural wealth
  • Effectively uses multiple pedagogical strategies including: community building activities; Socratic Seminars; heterogeneous group work
  • Does not rely only on lecture and discussion-based teaching techniques in 50% of teaching
  • Masters degree, preferably in Education or the Subject Matter Discipline
  • Demonstrated expertise in working with English language learners/emergent bilingual students (including experience with CELDT, English language development strategies, knowledge of law that impacts supports of English language learners, )
