Job Description
Candidates are sought for a Research Assistant Professor affiliated with the Center for Marine Autonomy and Robotics at Virginia Tech (https://marinerobotics.centers.vt.edu/). This non-tenure track appointment is for one year with extension to multiple years expected, but subject to availability of funds and performance evaluation. The successful candidate will conduct research in autonomy applied to marine vehicle systems, including underwater and surface vehicles. Specifically, the successful candidate will address challenges that arise with multi-agent collaboration in a maritime setting for applications such as rapid wide-area mapping and discovery and census of species and of geological features. Responsibilities include:
- Participating on and/or leading specific research thrusts
- Advising graduate students
- Developing scholarly works including journal and conference publications
- Contributing to proposal development, and eventually leading proposal development activities and serving as principal investigator.
- Interacting effectively with a diverse set of collaborators and research sponsors
Required Qualifications
- Earned PhD in electrical engineering or closely related discipline
- Experience developing autonomy algorithms for autonomous underwater vehicles with specific expertise in search theory, as evidenced by scientific publications.
- Experience developing research proposals, including concept development and proposal writing.
- Experience advising student research in marine autonomy and robotics
- Must have outstanding communication skills and willingness to interact with a diverse team of faculty, staff, and students on a daily basis. Must be able to communicate effectively with research sponsors.
Preferred Qualifications
Since the expected research topics are highly cross-disciplinary, the preferred ideal candidate will have a subset of the following additional qualifications and experiences: research in autonomy applied to marine vehicle systems, including underwater and surface vehicles. Specifically, the successful candidate will address challenges that arise with multi-agent collaboration in a maritime setting for applications such as rapid wide-area mapping and discovery and census of species and of geological features.
