The Graduate School at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is seeking applicants for a full-time, non-tenure track at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor with expertise in global health. The Assistant Professor will lead a Graduate Certificate in Implementation and Dissemination Science as well as a Graduate Certificate in Global Health Program Monitoring and Evaluation. Qualified candidates should have an earned PhD, MD, or equivalent with demonstrated potential for teaching excellence. Strong candidates will also have demonstrated interest in interprofessional, student-centered learning and student advising.

THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND GRADUATE SCHOOL

Since 1918, the University of Maryland Graduate School has grown to become among the most respected schools in the country offering graduate education and training in biomedical, health, and human service sciences. We offer Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree programs, and post-baccalaureate certificate programs in these areas of study. We also offer dual degrees with the University's professional schools including PhD/MD, PhD/PharmD and PhD/DDS degree programs, and we participate in inter-institutional studies in biochemistry, and gerontology with other University System of Maryland campuses.

All doctoral students are actively engaged in research with faculty members to address some of society's most pressing problems and biomedical research's most challenging questions in basic and translational research. These innovative efforts, supported by research grants and contracts, are undertaken collaboratively with the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the University of Maryland Medical Center, the Veterans Affairs Medical center, the Institutes for Human Virology, and others.

RESPONSIBILITIES

LEADERSHIP, SERVICE, and SCHOLARSHIP
  • Provide strategic direction and leadership for Graduate Certificates in Implementation and Dissemination Science and Global Health Program Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Develop short- and long-range planning objectives for the academic degree programs
  • Prepare a schedule of classes for program offerings for the fall, spring, and summer terms, and make recommendations to the Assistant Dean concerning program course offerings and student needs
  • Recruit program faculty as needed, including reviewing applications, participating in the interview process and making recommendations for employment
  • Liaison with faculty to ensure communication of their responsibility for providing administrative support to the program by administering student evaluations, completing and submitting grades, rosters, etc.
  • Advise the Assistant Dean on matters concerning the administration of the program, educational policies and decisions related to the morale and welfare of the programs faculty and students.
  • Participate in professional, university, and departmental service activities.
  • Engage in scholarly activity in areas of interest. Scholarship is broadly interpreted and may include implementation and assessment of novel instructional methods.
INSTRUCTION and CURRICULUM DESIGN
  • Teach Implementation and Dissemination Science, and Global Health Program Monitoring and Evaluation coursework
  • Develop new curricula and courses, course syllabi and outlines; revise courses, evaluate curricula and make recommendations for expansion and/or terminations of program components to the Assistant Dean as appropriate
  • Create an annual instructional design plan in collaboration with the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning
  • Implement appropriate program revisions and course catalog updates
  • Maintain appropriate records and conduct an annual program review
MARKETING, RECRUITMENT, and ADMISSIONS
  • Actively work with the Graduate School Marketing and Recruitment team to develop strategies for student recruitment and program promotion of a minimum of 20 students enrolled in each cohort
  • Provide responsive and proactive communication with prospective students
  • Lead an application review committee to evaluate student applications and make recommendations for admission
STUDENT ADVISING
  • Schedule and participate in orientation seminars for students and prospective students
  • Advise students on their individual plan of study and academic program requirements
  • Maintain close contact with students and evaluate their general welfare and response to program instruction
  • Address the needs of a highly diverse student population in age, ethnicity, and cultural background.
  • If systematic, communicate student problems to the Assistant Dean and recommend appropriate resolutions
  • Mentor and advise learners on scholarly research projects that lead to peer-reviewed publications
Qualifications :
  • Earned PhD, MD, or other doctorate degree in a related field
  • Demonstrated potential for teaching excellence
  • Service to the academic life of a college and/or university system. Where appropriate, contributions to the professional or lay community pertinent to the candidate’s professional training may meet the service criterion.
  • Scholarly contributions to the candidate’s field appropriate for the appointment of an assistant professor.
