Job Title: Part-Time Teaching Assistant (Vet Tech)

Compensation Type: Hourly

Compensation: $19.70

Schedule: M-F, day shift between 8am- 5pm. Up to 29 hours a week. May include evening and weekend hours as needed.

Position Summary

The Teaching Assistant, Veterinary Technology (Vet Tech) position provides administrative, laboratory, and technical support to the faculty of the Vet Tech department. This role maintains responsibility for assisting faculty in the classrooms, answering general student questions, supporting students in laboratory and clinical settings. This position serves to aid faculty in creating the most conducive learning environment in an effort to prepare our students for a career in the Veterinary Technology field.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Classroom Support

Provides classroom assistance to faculty, adjuncts, and students. Assists in maintaining Vet Tech lab cabinets including maintaining stock, organization of materials, ordering supplies, and preparing them for classes. Assists in preparing lab stations for faculty to support student learning. Assists in laboratory coverage as needed. Cleans and organizes assigned laboratory environments and identifies problems with laboratory equipment as they arise. Maintains laboratory supplies and equipment.

Customer Service

Answers general questions and provides information to student regarding course content, and resources available to students in need of assistance in determining course substitutions and prerequisite requirements, and other general information. Performs other duties to support teaching function for lecture, lab, and distance learning classes inclusive of working with the Vet Tech teaching assistant team to inventory and clean all departmental laboratories.

Administrative

Provides technical and administrative support for faculty, adjuncts and chairperson. Makes scheduling arrangements for classrooms and equipment. Orders, maintains, and distributes uniforms for students, staff, and faculty. Meets with faculty and staff to determine capital equipment needs, as needed.

Working Conditions

Normal working conditions with frequent exposure to animal waste, smells, noise and other conditions. Exposure to conditions typical of observing and assisting during veterinary procedures.

Knowledge of: general office practices and procedures; academic subject area and curriculums; course materials; behavioral intervention; mentoring or teaching best practices; office practices and procedures; English word usage, spelling, sentence structure, and punctuation; administrative and office management; computers, software, including cloud applications, and Microsoft Office applications (Work, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).


Skill in: large animal restraint (bovine and equine) ; verbal and written communications; excellent listening skills; maintaining good public relations; customer service; conflict resolution; general typing; application of job software programs; time management and organization; problem-solving under pressure; administrative problem solving; operating general office equipment .

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate’s Degree in a closely related field and at least one (1) year of progressively responsible veterinary clinical experience. Large animal experience including bovine and equine. State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s). An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework and experience may qualify a candidate.
