The Controller is a senior level position at Massachusetts Maritime Academy and it responsible for providing overall leadership and direction for the Business Office Department which includes a broad range of financial and business services within a robust technology based system.

 

General responsibilities:  Specific fiscal responsibilities include Accounting and Purchasing (accounts payable, accounts receivable, capital projects, Foundation, grant accounts and auxiliary services, contracts and purchasing processes)

  • Annual Audits Academy and Foundation, Budget development and Management, and Financial Reporting.
  • Ensure compliance in preparation and accuracy of financial reports (general financial statements, federal funds statements, and other reports required by the State of Massachusetts, Federal Government, various agencies)
  • Oversee management of cash and transfer funds
  • MMARS Liaison, GAAP Liaison, HR/CMS alternate Liaison. Responsible for updating MMARS/LCM rules and year end procedures.
  • Assist in the annual budget development process and ensure the accuracy and input of all budget data into systems.
  • Conduct quarterly reviews of budget vs actuals, report significant variances to VP of Finance.
  • Keep up to date on laws, regulations and compliance requirements related to areas of responsibilities. Develop procedures to comply and communicate updates to others as appropriate.

 

Qualifications and requirements:

  • Bachelor Degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Minimum of 5-10 years of senior level Accounting or Finance Management
  • Advance knowledge of and experience in Accounting, Auditing and investment principles, practices, procedures and reporting, including purchasing.
  • Knowledge and experience with state and federal laws, policies and software applications (such as MMARS< HRCMS, or similar systems.)
  • Extensive experience in accounting and general computer systems and overall data processing operations.
  • Strong skills in Microsoft applications.
  • Strong interpersonal, conflict resolution, organizational and planning skills.

 

Preferred Qualification:

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration or CPA or 10 years of senior level accounting/financial management experience, in and organization of similar size or complexity.

Salary:     $105,000 to $115,000.  The Academy offers generous benefits policies and a competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position is exempt under FLSA. The Academy is not sponsoring immigration visas at this time.
