Postdoctoral Research Associate

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and a world leader in experiential learning. The same commitment to connecting with the world drives our use-inspired research enterprise. The university offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate programs leading to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Our campuses in Charlotte, N.C., San Francisco, Seattle, and Toronto are regional platforms for undergraduate and graduate learning and collaborative research. Northeastern pursues advanced research in security and materials at the Innovation Campus in Burlington, Massachusetts, and in coastal sustainability at the Marine Science Center in Nahant, Massachusetts.

About the Opportunity:
Northeastern University Center for Renewable Energy Technology and Mukerjee Lab seeks one enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher to commence in late fall 2021 or winter 2022. The research focus will be on in situ and operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy with certain emphasis on XANES, EXAPS and delta-Mu techniques, high energy X-ray diffraction and tomography using National Synchrotron Lightsource facility(ies) to investigate electrochemical processes and structure evolution mechanisms in solid-state electrolytes (SSE) and electrochemical cells containing SSE, fuel cells and electrolysis cells, photocatalysts for plasmonically enhanced electrochemical phenomena.

Projects will involve wet chemistry inorganic synthesis, catalysis, use of Raman and UV spectroscopy, electrochemistry and structural characterization. In depth analysis of acquired experimental data for XAS, XANES, EXAFS and delta-Mu is a must. Other potential projects that align with our general direction are also possible. Position will require periodic travel to Brookhaven National Laboratory Synchrotron Facility (possibly Argonne or Stanford) for conducting experiments.

Responsibilities:
The primary responsibility of the postdoc is to conduct research. This particular position will require writing specific beam time proposals for allocating beamtime at Synchrotron facilities. The postdoc is also expected to write research papers, present research at meetings, contribute to research proposals, manage research data and software, and assist in mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.

Qualifications:
  • The candidate should have strong problem-solving skills, communication skills, and be highly motivated.
  • Demonstrated research experience in XAS spectroscopy (experiments and data analysis), inorganic synthesis, electrochemisty
  • Expertise in vibrational spectroscopy methods is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications:
The candidate should have a Ph.D. in spectroscopy, physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, or a closely related field.

Salary Grade:
10

How to Apply:
Applications should contain a cover letter briefly describing candidate's research experience and interests, a full CV with a publication list, Ph.D. completion date, and the names and contact information for three references who might be contacted for recommendations. Review of applications will begin immediately.

The position will be available starting December 1, 2021 and will remain open until filled. The initial appointment is for one year, with the potential for extension depending on regular progress evaluation and continuation of funding. It is generally expected that the appointment will be extended for at least one additional year if the progress evaluation is satisfactory.
