Department Summary
The Computer and Information Science Department in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Oregon offers BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees in Computer and Information Science; instruction is provided by 16 tenure track faculty, 2 emeritus faculty, and 6 career instructor faculty. The department serves approximately 600 undergraduate and 90 graduate majors and offers a number of general education classes in the discipline. The primary research foci of the tenure track faculty are high-performance computing, data science, networking, and distributed systems with cross-cutting concerns of security and privacy.
Position Summary
We are hiring a full-time software engineer at the UO to work with us on two closely related projects to create innovative and stable cyberinfrastructure to be used in fundamental and applied research across the sciences. The first project, named "CANDY: Cyberinfrastructure for Accelerating Innovation of Network Dynamics", is an NSF-funded project whose main objective is to develop tools for analyzing large dynamic networks that represent how complex systems change over time. Efficient analysis of such large networks requires (i) dynamically updating network properties rather than recomputing them and (ii) high-performance computing. The second project is to apply these tools for the analysis of "tree sequences," a dynamic network representation that is being used to store and analyze large genomic datasets, along with their genealogical history. We are working closely with an established development community around tree sequences (https://tskit.dev/).

The full-time software engineer at the UO (under the supervision of Dr. Norris, in collaboration with Dr. Ralph) will work collaboratively to develop and implement algorithms, ensuring that good software engineering practices (continuous integration, documentation, performance testing) are being applied. The software engineer will also manage container-based deployments and provide user support.
Minimum Requirements
This classification requires a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in systems analysis and related programming support functions generally obtained by a bachelor's degree in computer science or an equivalent amount of training and applied experience.
Professional Competencies
Expertise with C++, Python
Ability to work collaboratively and effectively as part of a team.
Ability to collect, document, and organize data and projects.
Commitment to promoting a work environment that embraces and appreciates diversity.
