DESCRIPTION: Cal Poly Humboldt's Department of Art + Film invites applications for a full-time, temporary Visiting Faculty appointment for academic year 2022/2023 in the area of Jewelry/Small Metals. This position is a full-time one (1) year appointment per the Collective Bargaining Agreement (Article 12.32). Initial appointment will be for the Fall 2022 semester. Subsequent reappointment for Spring 2023 is expected, but will be contingent upon satisfactory performance evaluation. For appointment in future terms, the faculty member must apply to the Temporary Faculty Pool and/or apply to other faculty vacancies at Cal Poly Humboldt, as they are available. The successful candidate will teach lower and upper division undergraduate courses in Jewelry/Small Metals.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: One-year, full-time temporary Visiting Faculty position for the 2022/2023 academic year. Rank and salary are dependent upon the appointee's qualifications and experience. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: An earned MFA or equivalent in Jewelry/Small Metals or related field from an accredited college or university is required at the time of appointment. Candidates with experience developing curriculum/courses/programs that inclusively serve a diverse student population and facilitate community growth are especially encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:
  • Capability to teach all aspects of the Jewelry/Metalsmithing medium at the lower and upper division levels,
    including beginning, intermediate, and advanced level courses;
  • Experience in overseeing all aspects of jewelry and small metals lab, including ability to supervise staff,
    scheduling of student employees, oversight of safety protocol, and equipment maintenance;
  • Broad knowledge of technology, concepts, and practices of jewelry and metalsmithing;
  • Evidence of successful university teaching beyond the teaching assistant level;
  • Ability and/or interest in teaching a broad range of courses to diverse students (majors, general education
    students, etc.);
  • Professional achievement in a studio practice;
  • Experience and/or commitment to promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of
    individuals from diverse backgrounds and willingness to participate in professional development activities
    especially toward inclusive and equitable pedagogies; and
  • Capacity to innovate curriculum to meet contemporary needs of the professional field.

    Preferred qualifications for this position include:
  • Experience with CAD and 3D printing techniques.

    PROFESSIONAL DUTIES: Candidates should be committed to teaching excellence. The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members in temporary positions are teaching, maintaining office hours and working collaboratively and productively with colleagues. Instructional assignments may include up to three studio courses and will be dependent upon the successful candidate's expertise. Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students.

    This position will also be responsible for overseeing the operation of the Jewelry & Small Metals lab, supervision of one part-time lab tech and scheduling of student assistants.

    Cal Poly Humboldt also continues to build unique and innovative learning opportunities for students, bridging the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities. Cal Poly Humboldt is a leader in “learning communities” that build relationships between students, faculty, staff, administrators, and the community.     GENERAL INFORMATION: The National Association of Schools of Art and Design accredits the Art Department at Cal Poly Humboldt. The department is organized to offer, at the undergraduate level, a B.A. degree with a major in art with concentrations in studio, art history and teacher preparation and a B.F.A. in Fine Art.     Cal Poly Humboldt sits on the traditional homelands of the Wiyot people in what is currently called Arcata, CA. The Wiyot people call the area Goudi'ni (over in the woods). The Cal Poly Humboldt campus in Northern California is in close proximity to several thriving Native American tribes and communities. Cal Poly Humboldt currently has the largest percentage of Native American students in the CSU system and has over 30 Native American faculty and staff many from local area California Indian tribes. Cal Poly Humboldt is home to a number of leading Native American programs including the Indian Tribal Education and Personnel Program (ITEPP) and the Indian Natural Resource, Science and Engineering Program (INRSEP). There are also many opportunities at Cal Poly Humboldt to conduct research, teaching and community work on Native American history and cultures in Special Collections at the Cal Poly Humboldt library. The Humboldt Room in the Library has fantastic resources for tribally focused archive materials from the region.
