Assistant/Associate Professor

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

The Bouve College of Health Sciences has over 200 faculty members, with approximately 2,000 undergraduate and 2,400 graduate students. It is the leading national model for education and research in the health, psychosocial and biomedical sciences and supports the University's mission of educating students for a life of fulfillment and accomplishment and creating and translating knowledge to meet global and societal needs.

The Department of Physical Therapy, Movement, and Rehabilitation Sciences, located within Bouve College of Health Sciences, is comprised of 30 faculty, some with joint or affiliated appointments in other colleges. The Department offers one of the oldest and largest Doctor of Physical therapy programs in the country with a hallmark experiential cooperative education program, a Ph.D., and Master's programs in Human Movement and Rehabilitation Sciences, an ABPTFRE Sports Physical Therapy Residency Program and a transitional Doctorate in Physical Therapy in collaboration with College of Professional studies.

Northeastern's Electrical and Computer Engineering department has 69 Tenured/Tenure Track faculty members, with established areas of excellence in high performance computing, robotics, IoT technologies, wireless systems, materials and devices, power systems, cybersecurity (NU is an NSA Center of Excellence in both education and research), and communications/ networking/ signal processing.

About the Opportunity:
Northeastern University (NU) is an R-1 institution and is on a trajectory of rapid growth in research, having nearly tripling its funding in the past decade to $190M. NU has just released a bold new strategic plan that outlines growth opportunities in experiential global education, research, and entrepreneurship in priority areas that will have significant impact on the university and on society.

As part of this effort, the Bouve College of Health Sciences (Bouve) and the College of Engineering (COE) are seeking to jointly hire a 39-week tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor, whose research focus aligns with some of the key impact engines of the university and the colleges, including digital health, augmented reality/virtual reality, cognitive and brain health, and/or robotics. Outstanding candidates whose work involves one or more of these areas of focus, and who can drive the research and education priorities of the Departments of Physical Therapy, Movement, and Rehabilitation Science (Bouve) and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (COE) will be strongly considered. The university was recently awarded a major research instrumentation grant from the National Science Foundation to acquire novel brain stimulation equipment which will be built around a core center for non-invasive brain stimulation and computation modeling. Candidates who have demonstrated expertise in human subjects neuroscience and movement research, clinical research in populations with neurological disease, engineering skills in signal processing, and computational approaches to data analytics are especially encouraged to apply. Individuals with a record of excellence in publication, grant awards, and teaching expertise in the above discipline(s) and impact engines will be given priority.

Our tenure and promotion process values collaborative research and teamwork. Hires will be mentored for success, with mentoring teams and group guidance. In addition, a strong and effective faculty development strategy is part of the Northeastern institutional mission. The ADVANCE Office of Faculty Development office works in conjunction with the Office of Research Development (ORD), the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion (OIDI), the Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning Through Research (CATLR), and University Decision Support (UDS) to provide programs and trainings to further develop and support a thriving faculty.

At Northeastern University, we embrace a culture of respect, where each person is valued for their contribution and is treated fairly. We oppose all forms of racism. We support a culture that does not tolerate any form of discrimination and where each person may belong. We strive to have a diverse membership, one where each person is trained and mentored to promote their success.

Responsibilities:
Responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, conducting an independent and externally funded research program, and participating in departmental, college, and university service, as well as supervising undergraduates, M.S. and Ph.D. students, and postdocs in their area of research. Qualified candidates must demonstrate expertise in working with diverse student populations and/or in a culturally diverse work and educational environment.

Qualifications:
  • PhD / M.D. degree in neuroscience, engineering, medicine, or related field is required by the appointment start date.
  • Excellence in being able to work collaboratively with individuals across diverse training backgrounds (clinicians, engineers, neuroscientists, psychologists, etc.) and strong written and verbal communication skills is required.
  • Ability to integrate multiple fields for impact on public health is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Postdoctoral experience in neuroscience, engineering, or a related field, including experience in brain stimulation, human movement measurement and analysis, signal processing, and computational modeling is strongly preferred, but not required.
  • Experience with NIH and NSF grant applications is preferred, but not required.
  • Teaching excellence or a demonstrated commitment to teaching courses in the above areas is preferred.
