Position Summary:
The Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) Learning Specialist, within Academic Support Programs, is responsible for successful support of student-athletes with identified learning differences. The Learning Specialist provides intensive academic support to an assigned group of identified student-athletes from various sports.

Duties include but are not limited to: academic coaching of student-athletes that present academic risk factors, assessing student-athlete academic needs, monitoring academic progress, assist with the planning and facilitation of Summer Bridge programming for new student-athletes, assist with the planning and instruction of INTR 210 Student-Athlete Success course. The incumbent works collaboratively with University of Idaho athletic administrators, coaching staffs, faculty, and campus academic support areas. The position reports to the Associate Athletic Director of SASS.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree • One (1) year of demonstrated experience in a higher education or a high school setting (academic advising, student services, student affairs, student support and/or student retention efforts).
• Experience utilizing learning strategies and developing academic intervention strategies at a university or high school level to enhance learning for academically under-prepared students and students with education-impacting disabilities.
• Presenting information clearly and concisely to individuals, small, and large groups.

Preferred Qualifications:
Education:
• Master’s degree in education, psychology, counseling, or related field

Experience:
• One or more years of experience working in counseling/advising college student-athletes while working with coaches, faculty, support staff, and administrators in an intercollegiate athletic department at the NCAA Division 1 level.
• Strong administrative skills in initiating and implementing programs; skills in personnel management and public relations.
• Demonstrated working knowledge of NCAA academic rules and regulations.
• N4A membership.

Abilities/Skills:
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse educational, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
• Sensitivity to, respect for, and understanding of educational and social developmental needs of student-athletes.
• Familiarity with academic assessment tools, current research, and learning strategies.
• Ability to multi-task and work under tight timelines.
• Knowledge of disability regulations and laws associated in higher education.
• Strong commitment to academic and personal integrity.
