Job Description

Montgomery College, Germantown Campus, has an immediate need for a full-time Instructional Lab Coordinator in the Chemistry Department. The current Spring 2022 schedule is M,T, R, F (8:30am-5:00pm) and W (2:00pm-10:30pm). This is a bargaining, non-exempt, position. For non-exempt positions, you are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. Under minimal supervision, the Instructional Lab Coordinator will oversee and coordinate the daily operations and activities of assigned instructional chemistry laboratories. The work involves set-up and organizing areas for the laboratory instruction and coordinating with and providing services to faculty.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • The physical demands involve the conditions of working in a chemical laboratory with hazardous materials. Employees must wear appropriate PPE such as chemical splash goggles and gloves.
  • Prepare, set up and dismantle laboratory exercises for the laboratories you are assigned. This includes making chemical solutions, labeling secondary containers according to GHS labeling guidelines, and setting up the experiment materials in the instructional laboratory.
  • Consult syllabi and lab manuals to plan activities and ensure smooth daily operations of instructional laboratories while maintaining strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy
  • Provide technical assistance to students and faculty
  • Oversee student assistants working in the prep room
  • Procure supplies and equipment within budget limitations and submit expense reports as required
  • Identify, label and collect potentially hazardous substances, including laboratory waste
  • Maintain an inventory of laboratory chemicals and supplies for the laboratories you are assigned to assure smooth operation of the labs
  • Maintain the Cloud SDS Inventory for the Chemistry department.
  • Maintain the Blackboard laboratory preparation information site for the Chemistry laboratories
  • Maintain organization of laboratory materials such as glassware, equipment, chemicals, and similar items in your assigned areas
  • Maintain scientific instruments and equipment; troubleshoot when needed and contact service personnel for repairs and maintenance
  • Support teaching during laboratories with instrumentation. Ensure safe laboratory practices when using instruments
  • Maintain workspace, stockroom, and instructional laboratories in a clean and organized manner in compliance with safety requirements.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in Chemistry or a related discipline, which includes two semesters of Organic Chemistry at the college level.
  • Four years of experience working in a Chemistry laboratory or similar work environment
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures, principles, practices, record keeping, and techniques used in working in a Chemistry laboratory. Familiar with instruments used in chemistry such as the NMR, FT-IR, polarimeters, melting point instruments, GC and GCMS.
  • The ability to read a manual and to self-teach how to use and maintain a new instrument purchased for the lab.
  • Familiarity with the principles and practices of learning as applied to the role of instructional support staff and laboratory procedures.
  • Considerable knowledge of instructional technology, equipment and educational materials employed in assigned instructional laboratory, and administrative practices and procedures, including purchasing and record keeping.
  • Frequently required to stand for long periods of time, frequently bend, stoop, or reach to move 10 pounds of lab equipment and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds. Good vision through goggles to read small chemical label print, and the ability to work in a stressful environment with multiple daily deadlines is required to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.   • Ability to operate various items of office and lab related equipment, such as, personal computer, printer, copier, and dishwasher

Initial salary placement $28.58 to $37.15 per hour, commensurate with education and experience.
