Work type: Remote, Temporary
Department: INTL DIV/SASLI
Location: Madison
Categories: Instructional Facilitation and Management of For-credit Courses

Job Summary:

The Turkish Flagship Language Initiative (TURFLI) is a special initiative of the Boren Awards for International Study offering awardees the opportunity for intensive language study of Turkish and for cultural immersion by participating in domestic and overseas language programs. Participants in TURFLI may start with no language proficiency through advanced proficiency in Turkish. The TURFLI program is administered through the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Although the main focus of the TURFLI program is for students to learn Turkish, TURFLI students will be travelling to Baku, Azerbaijan to continue their Turkish language study abroad. Therefore, the TURFLI students will need a basic knowledge of the Azeri alphabet, key words, and phrases they might encounter in the city and in their host families. Explanations to questions regarding Azeri should be explained, preferably, in Turkish. Explanations in English should be given as a last resort.

In addition to full-time language courses, students will have language partners, language conversation tables (summer), homestays (fall), and cultural excursions to help ensure that language goals are being met.

The TURFLI Azeri Tutor will work with Turkish language students and will participate in a mandatory orientation meeting at the beginning of the summer. The orientation meeting addresses general topics such as the goals of the TURFLI Program, expectations of TURFLI students and the Azeri tutor, program logistics, remuneration, supervision, and procedures for addressing questions or problems. This orientation will take place during the first week of classes, which runs from June 20-24, 2022.

During the summer session, the Azeri tutor will meet with the TURFLI cohort one time per week for one class hour (50 minutes). Each meeting will be held at a location conducive to language practice and at a standard, consistent time that is convenient for the students and the tutor. Due to the low volume of hours for this position, the Azeri Tutor may work remotely and hold sessions virtually. Azeri tutorial sessions begin during the second week of classes, the week of June 27, and continue through the last week of classes, the week of August 8. If it is necessary to reschedule in a given week, the Azeri tutor should notify the TURFLI Program Coordinator and the TURFLI Pedagogy Coordinator and schedule a make-up session with students as soon as possible.

Preparation for Azeri tutorial sessions should be clear with set goals. The Azeri tutor should work with the Pedagogy Coordinator to outline lesson plans and basic concepts of their tutorial sessions. The Azeri tutor is paid for one hour of preparation for every class contact hour with students. No homework is to be assigned to the students. However, the Azeri tutor is encouraged to provide the students with online resources or handouts for the perusal at their leisure.

The Azeri tutor is expected to keep appointments with students, keep track of student attendance, submit weekly reports on their tutorial sessions, and keep their Supervisor informed of any concerns.

More Job Summary specifics below:

The Azeri Tutor will work with TURFLI students in the Azeri and Turkish target languages to provide a general knowledge and base of the Azeri language. Following the instructions of the Pedagogy Coordinator and Program Coordinator, incorporate these lessons into the tutorial practicum. Spend 90% and above of the time with the students conversing in the target language. Use visual prompts and body language to convey concepts in the target language that the students do not understand to encourage the students to think and speak only in the target language. Meet with the TURFLI student cohort for 50-minute tutorial sessions, one time per week for seven weeks during the 8-week summer session (tutoring weeks are week 2-8). Keep track of attendance at each session.

For each 50-minute tutorial session, plan for one hour of preparation prior to the tutorial practicum. Meet with the Program Coordinator and Pedagogy Coordinator as required to ensure that the needs of the students and the program are paramount in every Azeri tutorial session.

The Azeri Tutor will prepare weekly reports for the TURFLI Program Coordinator and Turkish Pedagogy Coordinator highlighting the weekly Azeri tutorial sessions, issues raised, and areas for improvement
Prepare seven weekly reports and during the summer term, beginning with week two of the 8-week summer term and ending with week eight of the summer term. Each report will account for student attendance, highlight the sessions with TURFLI students and highlight weaknesses, strengths, improvements, and suggestions for more successful sessions moving forward. These reports should take about 30 minutes to complete each week.
