The School of Art within the College of Visual and Performing Arts seeks a Part-Time Instructor to teach ARI 225 Ceramics Slip-casting & Mold Making, a three credit hour course, during the 2022 spring semester.

Designed for beginner/ intermediate undergraduate ceramic students, ARI 225 is an introduction and immersion into the ceramic process of mold making and slip-casting. Focused on the development of artistic practice, this course will explore major themes within ceramic production and allow the student to work through concepts using clay, plaster and glaze. Qualifications
BA/ BFA Job Specific Qualifications
Familiarity with a complex ceramics facility, including clay mixers, gas and electric kilns and previous experience working with molds and slip-casting at an accomplished, artistic level. Responsibilities
Job specific responsibilities:
Demonstrate relevant mold-making techniques (press mold, two-part press mold, multi-part slip casting mold) as well as surface considerations (slip, underglaze and glaze related to low and mid-range ceramics) associated with the assignments. This includes preparing powerpoint presentation of contemporary and historical references, preparing parts of the demonstration ahead of time so that the entire process can be covered during a class time. Demonstrate and be comfortable with loading both bisque (electric) and gas kilns.

In addition:
• Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.
• Preparation of lectures, projects or other student assignments.
• Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours-minimum 2 hours/week.
• Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
• Meeting all designated class periods. If you are unable to meet your class due to illness or emergency, you should exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or to obtain a substitute. You must also notify the department chair of your absence and of your plan to cover the class.
• Submitting completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
• Grading student assignments and exams in timely manner.
• Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
• Building a positive rapport with students and other faculty.
