Summary/Objective

This position gathers and analyzes sustainability related data and ensures completion of sustainability and green building related assessments and reports. The incumbent identifies opportunities for sustainability while tracking, benchmarking, and analyzing a wide range of metrics related to sustainability in operations and programming. The incumbent supports communication efforts and sustainability programming. This position reports to the Director of Sustainability. This position operates with close supervision. This position includes some supervision of student employees.

Essential Functions
  1. Assessments: Oversees and ensures accuracy in data collection, reporting, and benchmarking efforts for all sustainability metrics including greenhouse gas emissions; Analyzes data used in sustainability metrics to identify opportunities and to support decision making; Compiles and analyzes documentation of sustainability practices (including energy and water use, purchasing, transportation, and other metrics) using STARS (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System); Manages sustainability related surveys including the annual transportation survey; Compiles, analyzes, and ensures completeness of data for other assessment tools as needed.
  2. Green Buildings and Operations: Collaborates with staff across Facilities Management, Project Management, Purchasing, and Housekeeping to track, analyze and improve campus and building performance related to waste, energy use, and water consumption; Reviews and evaluates new programs or measures for cost savings, sustainability impact, and feasibility; Supports LEED applications and serves as data lead for some credits.
  3. Communication and Administration: Supplies metrics and data (data visualization) to support content generation for website, social media, sustainability newsletter; Participates in campus sustainability programming including leading occasional tours; Represents AU at conferences, delivers presentations on sustainability work; Encourages stakeholders to adopt practices that improve sustainability performance of operations, and services; drives public dialogue concerning the University’s responsibility and contributions to the environment; Identifies opportunities for collaboration and recognition; Administrative support for the office; Supports the director of sustainability and other duties as assigned.

  • Travel around campus required; occasional travel to conferences in order to deliver presentations on sustainability work.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent
  • Field of study in environmental studies, business, or related area.
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience
Preferred Education and Experience
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience
  • Preference will be given to candidates with LEED Accredited Professional O+M or NC credential
  • Higher Education work experience
  • Experience working with students and student organizations
  • Project management experience
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
  • Strong quantitative skills
  • Data visualization skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively through various informational and training modalities to communicate sustainability projects, goals and polices.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft (Excel, Project, & PowerPoint)
  • Understanding of metrics tracking across sustainability topic areas such as climate, energy, water, waste, transportation, and purchasing
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn about building management, systems, operations, maintenance, and controls
  • Must have interpersonal, communication, public speaking skills and strong written communication skills
  • Experience with and aptitude for technology and software
  • Ability to work in a diverse environment with all organizational levels
  • Ability to effectively plan and coordinate multi-task requirements and meet objectives and deadlines
  • Ability to work effectively in a service-oriented environment subject to changing priorities
