Are you an experienced, creative and versatile multimedia storyteller with a passion for inspiring an audience through the lens of your camera? Metropolitan State University of Denver is looking for a motivated videographer, editor and producer rolled into one – a dynamic storyteller with expert technical skills who is as comfortable at an editing workstation as s/he is behind the camera. The ideal candidate will also be a capable stills photographer, though the primary focus of this role will be on producing a wide range of video projects.

As visual storyteller, you will join a talented and dedicated editorial team focused on telling MSU Denver’s unique story across multiple platforms, including RED, the University’s award-winning digital newsroom; RED magazine; social media; The Early Bird, our daily employee-engagement newsletter; and more. The visual storyteller will also work with MSU Denver’s marketing team to produce advertising spots, promotional videos and other visual content that supports the University’s strategic marketing goals. This position reports to the assistant director of photography and video production in MSU Denver’s Strategy, Marketing and Communications Branch.

60% Video production, including pre-production, field production and post-production.
  • Works on daily and long-term video assignments, sometimes as part of a team and often as a solo videographer/producer.
  • Shoots and edits a wide range of video projects, including news, event, training, marketing and social media-focused productions.
  • Is a strong writer, capable of developing compelling video scripts and storyboards.
  • Is a nimble editor, capable of turning video assignments quickly.
  • Provides counsel and production services for University departments, schools and colleges in support of their communication needs and strategic goals.
  • Develops storyboards and scripts for a variety of internally and externally focused video projects, including news, documentary, promotional and educational productions.
  • Works with the director of media relations to provide photos, b-roll and other content to media organizations.
20% Photography, including planning, shooting and editing news, magazine, event, marketing and other assignments.
  • Works on daily photography assignments, sometimes as part of a team and often solo.
  • Plans, shoots and edits a wide range of photography projects, including news, event, marketing, portrait and web photo assignments.
  • Is a strong writer, capable of crafting succinct and descriptive photo cutlines.
  • Coordinates with the director of client services to provide photography content for University departments, schools and colleges in support of their communication needs and strategic goals.
10% Archiving and asset management.
  • Works with the assistant director of photography and video production to develop and execute photography and video production workflows, archiving and asset management.
5% Equipment inventory and maintenance.
  • Oversees the security, operation and maintenance of cameras, lighting, audio gear, editing workstation and other photography and video production equipment.
5% Metrics analysis reporting. Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Professional experience shooting, editing and producing news, documentary-style and scripted video projects, including advertising spots.
  • Expert-level proficiency with digital cinema and DSLR cameras, as demonstrated in a portfolio or professional works samples.
  • Expert-level proficiency with Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro or similar video editing software, as demonstrated in a portfolio or professional works samples.
  • Expert-level proficiency using photography editing and management software, including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom and Photo Mechanic.
  • Demonstrated understanding of video formats and compression, including experience using Media Encoder, Compressor or similar software.
  • Professional experience developing storyboards and writing scripts.

  • Experience working in a video production house, agency, news organization or institution of higher learning.
  • Experience using content management and asset management platforms.
  • Proficient using After Effects, Motion or other motion graphics software.
  • Experience with audio mixing and sound design, including proficiency in audio editing software such as Adobe Audition and Audacity.
  • Experience as a one-person-band video producer or multimedia journalist, with journalistic instincts and strong interviewing skills.
  • Experience with studio production, including lighting and green-screen work.
Work Hours
