Scope of Job:
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's diverse student body as an Assistant Professor in Practice of Counseling beginning in the 2022-2023 academic year.
The individual selected for this position will be responsible for providing direct instruction to students working toward a graduate degree in counseling and may include supervision of practicum/internship students. As a program on a distributed campus, teaching may occur on the Brownsville or Edinburg campuses. Other responsibilities include compliance with relevant professional accreditation and state licensing boards such as Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), Texas Department of Health and Human Services, and Texas Education Agency, including yearly maintenance of records and assessment; active engagement as program community liaison; advising graduate students in counselor education; participating in professional associations and activities to enhance professional development of counselors at the local, state, and national levels; and serving the public and constituencies of the department, college, and university as approved/assigned. Department/College BackgroundLocated within College of Education and P-16 Integration at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), the Department of Counseling offers a CACREP-accredited Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree designed to prepare highly competent professionals who can respond to the life span mental health needs of a multicultural community. Preparation of the professional counselor is accomplished through completion of a 60-hour degree with specializations in Clinical Mental Health Counseling or School Counseling. The vision of the Department of Counseling is to be the catalyst for the education and mental well-being of individuals, families, communities, the region, and our society-at-large through thoughtful, culturally sustaining partnerships with communities, mental health facilities, and schools, thereby demonstrating responsiveness to the mental health needs of the people of the Rio Grande Valley.
The Clinical Mental Health Counseling specialization prepares students to provide a broad range of counseling services in mental health and substance abuse facilities, community-based organizations such as child protective services, college and university counseling centers, and private practice. The School Counseling specialization prepares students to work as school counselors providing services to children in preschool through 12th grade. In collaboration with the UTRGV School of Medicine/Family Practice, the Department of Counseling also prepares students to become Behavioral Health Consultants through a certificate in Primary Care Behavioral Health.

The College of Education and P-16 Integration offers teacher preparation at the undergraduate level, master's programs in educational leadership; teacher leadership; educational technology; curriculum and instruction; school psychology; bilingual education, early childhood, reading and literacy; and counseling. We also offer Ed.D.s in educational leadership and curriculum and instruction with several specialization areas. The College of Education and P-16 Integration is fully accredited by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and is pursuing accreditation by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

Minimum Qualifications:
Earned doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Supervision (CES) or related field. Applicants who have completed all requirements except the dissertation (ABD) will be considered, as long as the degree is conferred prior to the time of hire (September 1, 2022).

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:
Licensure as a Professional Counselor in Texas (LPC) or comparable licensure from another state, or eligible for Texas licensure at the time of hire (September 1, 2022)

Preferred Qualification:
  • Preference will be given to applicants with a) a doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision (CACREP-CES);
  • Training and/or experience with integrated behavioral health care;
  • Experience as a service provider in mental health or primary care agencies, clinics, or hospitals;
  • Experience with instruction and direct supervision of counselors-in-training at the graduate level;
  • Bilingual proficiency (Spanish).

Additional Information:
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days inlength.
