Deputy Title IX Coordinator, Investigator

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Access & Equity and Title IX Coordinator, the Deputy will play a key role in the College's efforts to provide and maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for all members of the Emerson Community. The Deputy assists with the day-to-day operations of the Access, Equity and Title IX office to ensure Emerson College's compliance with relevant sexual misconduct and equal opportunity laws, and foster a welcoming, safe, nondiscriminatory, and harassment-free educational, living, and working environment for all members of the Emerson community.

The Deputy manages the coordination, response, investigation, and resolution of reports asserting violations of the College policies and applicable federal, state, and local laws around accessibility and non-discrimination, including: Title IX of the Educational Amendments Act of 1972 and the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Title VI and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The Deputy assists with the development and implementation of college-wide education, training, and outreach related to Title IX, the Clery Act, the Violence Against Women Act, and the Campus SaVE Act. In addition, the Deputy will work with staff in Student Accessibility Services to provide education around and to comply with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act. In addition, the Deputy will proactively build trust, interact, and collaborate with members of the Social Justice Center, Campus Life, Academic Affairs, and Enrollment Management divisions in various ways and will work to educate the campus community on bias response, building relationships that serve as the foundation for cooperation and open dialogue with and among students, faculty, and staff.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Supports the AVP in the management of the initial intake of reports to ensure a well-documented, prompt, and fair response;
  • Serves as a member of the Title IX Investigator team.
  • Seeks resolutions to and, where appropriate, investigates reports related to violations of Title IX and applicable federal, state, and local laws around accessibility and non-discrimination, communicates with parties while protecting the independence, neutrality, integrity and privacy of the investigation, prepares comprehensive written investigative reports, maintains accurate and thorough records, and advises leadership on potential risk exposure associated with reports investigated.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with and among College offices on discrimination, harassment, and power-based interpersonal violence issues, including, but not limited to: Campus Life, Academic Affairs, Human Resources, General Counsel, Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct, Healing and Advocacy Collective, Student Accessibility Services, and Campus Police.
  • Serves as an internal resource, working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders in a sensitive context often complicated by the presence of competing perspectives or interests.
  • Develops and maintains a compliance matrix and repository of compliance resources.
  • Provides to the AVP and other College leadership, on a timely basis, a summary of the reports and inquiries received by the Deputy, as well as actions taken to resolve/investigate the reports.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with the other Title IX Coordinators on matters related to Title IX including, as needed, complaint response/investigation, training/education, and program development.
  • Performs a variety of administrative and other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, Education and Work Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 7 years of relevant professional experience are required; an advanced degree in law or a related field is preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and proven success in providing equitable and respectful treatment to all individuals, fostering positive relationships with diverse constituencies, and an understanding of the intersectionality of a diverse student population.
  • Working knowledge of relevant state and federal laws including Title IX, Clery, VAWA, and Campus SaVE, as well as trends and initiatives both national and local.
  • Expertise in Title IX, non-discrimination or related experience is required, preferably in a residential higher education setting.
  • Proven ability to conduct fair and unbiased investigations; to facilitate difficult conversations with empathy, compassion, and discretion; the ability to maintain confidentiality and professional relationships in dealing with sensitive and complex civil rights and legal issues.
  • Expertise concerning trauma, sexual assault, sexual harassment, stalking, and intimate partner violence in a university or college setting.
  • Excellent written and oral communication abilities, including preparation and presentation of detailed reports, educational programs, training, and assessments.
  • Excellent problem-solving, conflict resolution, planning, and project management ability.
  • Proven ability to make difficult decisions when necessary.
  • Ability to build rapport, work collaboratively with, and navigate complex issues across constituencies including students, faculty, staff, and alumni;
  • Sound judgment, objectivity, and integrity.

    Hiring Range: $107,700.00 - $113,300.00
