Position Overview:  The New York School of Interior Design, an accredited, independent institution of higher education devoted entirely to the discipline of interior design and its related professions, seeks an individual to serve as Associate Dean.  The Associate Dean is the second highest academic position in the college. The Associate Dean assists the VPAA/Dean of the College in administering the academic programs, accreditation activities, supervising faculty, maintaining the integrity of the academic offerings, and building the reputation of the college.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Representative of the Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) at the NYSID Academic buildings
  • Coordination of course content for designated degree programs, across sections; distribution of course materials
  • Training and mentoring of faculty
  • Supervision and coordination of degree programs, and the relevant program coordinators or directors, as designated by the VPAA/Dean, and as reflected in the OAA organizational chart
  • Working with the OAA Administrator in scheduling the scheduling of classes:
    • Knowledge of the scheduling process
    • Responsibility for scheduling all classes in the designated degree programs, including verification of cohorts created by Advising
    • Assigning faculty with the approval of the VPAA/Dean
    • Entering information into NYSID’s scheduling software (EMS)
    • Providing and verifying information for the semester bulletins
  • Managing the room scheduling process as assigned by the VPAA/Dean
  • Attendance at Registration and all other coordination meetings as required
  • Coordination of assessment activities under the direction of the VPAA/Dean
  • Attendance at and participation in all OAA staff meetings
  • Attendance at Thesis show openings and 3 other public program or college-related events per year
  • Continuing professional education in design, interior design education, and teaching
  • Attendance at professional conferences: minimum one per year, unless otherwise directed by the VPAA/Dean
  • Regular active participation in professional design and education organizations, preferably at the leadership level. Examples: reviewer, committee member, site or accreditation visitor, design charrettes
  • Work with the Admissions Office as required for review of portfolio submittals, and to represent the college at selected recruitment events

 CURRICULUM

  • Curriculum review and development for designated programs
  • Teaching as directed by the VPAA/Dean - 0-4 classes per academic year
  • Participation in Academic Council
  • Participation in accreditation activities, for the institution and for the programs

 FACULTY

  • Serve on the Committee on Appointments
  • Program and course review
  • Supervision of faculty effectiveness within assigned programs, including review of faculty evaluations, facilitating the resolution of faculty-student conflict, and support for faculty with regard to classroom management, teaching strategies, and curriculum implementation
  • Planning and implementation of New Faculty orientations and new faculty onboarding
  • Participation in improvement of the Faculty Self-Evaluation process
  • Attendance at all Faculty Meetings & program level advisory board meetings

 All other duties as assigned

 Qualifications:

Master’s degree in interior design from a CIDA accredited program OR undergraduate degree in Interior Design or related field and additional related master’s degree, with extensive professional experience required. NCIDQ-certificate required; interior design license preferred. Must demonstrate excellent teaching practices and administrative ability.  Higher education experience required.  Minimum of two years of teaching experience, or ten years of professional design experience or a combination of teaching and professional experience is required.  Must know AutoCAD, Revit, Adobe Suite and other digital drawing and computer technologies.  Must be highly organized and possess good communication and customer service skills.  Must know Microsoft Excel and Word.
