Research Scientist - Physics and Astronomy
West Virginia University Research Corporation is currently accepting applications for a Research Scientist in the Department Physics and Astronomy, Eberly College of Arts and Sciences.
About the Opportunity
As a Research Scientist, you will engage in research into the
evolution of merging magnetic flux ropes, i.e., magnetic
reconnection. Lead the incoherent Thomson scattering diagnostic
effort and operate the two pulsed plasma guns in the PHASMA
experiment at WVU. He/she will supervise the research activities of
graduate and undergraduate students, will engage in research in
collaboration with the PI, will publish the results of research
activities, attend scientific conferences, and maintain scientific
collaborations.

What you’ll do:
These responsibilities are functional in nature and performed under
limited supervision. Specific tasks include, but are not limited
to:
1) Performs experimental plasma physics
research.
2) Supervises graduate and undergraduate students
in research.
3) Disseminates results of research.
4) Write publications based on the project
results.
5) Present the results of research/studies at
international professional meetings, technical conferences, and
research group meetings.
6) Publish the results of research/studies in
academic-quality, archival journals.
7) Oversight of research group equipment and
software maintenance.
8) Develops and submit new proposals for research
funding support from federal agencies and/or industry.
Qualifications
• Ph.D. in experimental plasma physics or
equivalent
• A minimum of 2 years Postdoctoral experience in
plasma physics
• Working knowledge of plasma sources, plasma
diagnostics, and spectroscopy.
• Ability to travel for work, correspond with
others, etc.
• Skill in using critical thinking by logic and
reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative
solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
• Skilled in considering the relative costs and
benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate
one.
• Skilled to communicate effectively, both orally
and in writing, as demonstrated by journal publications and
presentations at technical meetings.
• Skill in identifying complex problems and
reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and
implement solutions.
• Ability to combine pieces of information to
form general rules or conclusions.
• Ability to write technical reports, procedures,
papers, presentations and to communicate results and scientific
information to clients, sponsors and members of the scientific
community.
• Ability to choose the right mathematical
methods or formulas to solve a problem.
• Ability to perform effectively under conditions
of fluctuating workload.
• Ability to work independently to complete
assigned projects.
