Job Summary/Description

  • Under administrative direction, plans, organizes, implements, and directs the programs, activities, and functions of the college. Responsible for oversight of university research activities and related compliance management.

Typical Duties/Job Duties

  1. Provides direction concerning a variety of administrative and academic issues such as recruiting efforts, admissions procedures, planning and goal setting, curriculum, program development, graduate student learning outcomes assessment, and policy interpretation.
  2. Formulates or revises policies and procedures affecting the operations or functions of the college; works with senior administrative officials in matters relating to Graduate Studies and University programs.
  3. Oversees and serves as the Institutional Official (IO) for the: Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), and the Institutional Review Board (IRB).
  4. Oversees Coordinates the development and submission of research proposals; chairs the Faculty Research Enhancement Program Committee, Compliance Committee, the Graduate Council and serves as the university’s Research Integrity Officer (RIO).
  5. Analyzes and resolves student, graduate faculty, academic, and administrative problems and conflicts in an effective manner; Recommends appointments and evaluates Graduate Assistants and, Teaching Assistants, and Research Assistants; Reviews and approves graduate student degree plans; certifies the completion of all academic requirements for student graduation; provides academic advice and guidance to current or prospective students.; Prepares a variety of correspondence, memoranda, and administrative reports. ; Develops annual budget for the college; monitors expenditures and ensures compliance with State regulations and University policies; Works with support staff in managing the tasks and functions of the College of Graduate Studies and Research office; delegates routine tasks to office staff as appropriate; evaluates staff performance and provides counseling and feedback, as appropriate; Evaluates graduate proposals and theses.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of academic programs of Graduate Studies; knowledge of applicable University policies, procedures, and practices; knowledge of the principles and practices of effective management and employee supervision; knowledge of budget and grant preparation and administration; knowledge of federal, state, and University requirements for research and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to plan, organize, implement, direct and evaluate academic and related programs and functions; ability to effectively coordinate a variety of programs and activities; ability to provide effective direction and supervision to department chairs, support staff; and others, as appropriate; ability to deal innovatively with governmental agencies, business, and industry; ability to demonstrate creativity and vision; ability to interpret and correctly apply University policies and procedures; ability to analyze problems and determine appropriate solutions; ability to operate a personal computer keyboard and/or computer terminal for the preparation of correspondence, reports, and other materials. 
  • Skill in excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication is required. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • An earned Ph.D. or comparable terminal degree from a regionally accredited institution in an academic discipline appropriate to the assignment is required. Demonstrated record of scholarly achievement appropriate to the discipline in which the terminal degree is held is required.  Two years as an academic department chair, or other experience in the management of graduate degree programs required. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Eligibility for graduate faculty status and senior rank, and strong research and grant writing background preferred. Experience at the academic dean level is also desirable.
