David H. Burton Postdoctoral Fellowship

Position Summary:
Postdoctoral in Public History

Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia invites applications for the David H. Burton Postdoctoral Fellowship, a teaching and research position honoring Dr. Burton, a model teacher-scholar at SJU for over fifty years. The Burton Fellowship is a one-year appointment at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor, beginning Fall 2022, with potential renewal for up to two additional years.

This year, we invite applications from candidates in public history, with specialization in American history (preference will be given to early American history, colonial era to Civil War). Applications are due on February 1, 2022 and must be submitted on-line at https://jobs.sju.edu

Applications should include a cover letter that outlines the candidate’s interests and goals in carrying out public history work and teaching at Saint Joseph’s University, a curriculum vitae, and a sample of writing or public history work. Finalists will be asked for three letters of reference. The successful applicant will have Ph.D. in hand by May 15, 2022, and will have received it no earlier than 2017.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Fellow will be expected to teach a 2/2 load of public and American history courses, as well as conduct work in public history that moves beyond the traditional classroom and scholarly publication. Teaching load may be flexible depending on one’s public history workload. Fellows should develop projects on or off campus that may include work with monuments, museum and digital exhibits, GIS mapping, oral history, historical preservation, walking tours, performance, media projects, etc. Burton Fellows are also expected to offer an annual public lecture and an annual faculty workshop on pedagogical methods or their research/public history work. Dedicated funding will be available for research support and/or public history work.

We encourage applications from scholars aspiring to careers in public history, as well as those targeting the tenure track.

Minimum Requirements:
The successful applicant will have Ph.D. in hand by May 15, 2022, and will have received it no earlier than 2017.

On-line applications only. Please provide a letter of application/interest and resume.  For a complete description of position responsibilities, qualifications, and to apply, please visit: https://jobs.sju.edu/postings/18831.
