Under general guidance, uses specialized knowledge of subjects, languages, computer applications, or disciplines that apply to library processes and/or services or provides specialized knowledge of library functions. Uses a variety of systems and resources to provide access to library collections, and performs the more complex technical functions requiring proficiency with technical protocols, digital technology, and data manipulation skills. Exercises initiative and independent judgment when providing service or interpreting, analyzing and applying policies and procedures, including those related to fiscal decisions. Routinely analyzes and resolves complex problems that may impact other Library departments or the organization as a whole, and /or external parties and organizations. Qualifications
Associate’s degree and at least 4 years of library or related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with MS Office, Access, Internet, Email. Job Specific Qualifications
  • Providing access services related customer service at the Bird circulation desks, and occasionally at Carnegie service desk.
  • Assist in student worker management, including but not limited to monitoring student schedules and providing daily direction of work study students.
  • Perform reserves processing functions and processes, including gathering and organizing reserves requests, and placing items on reserve in Voyager.
  • Assist in supporting stacks maintenance responsibilities for Bird Library.
  • Participate in resolving and tracking patron issues using appropriate tools and systems.
  • Participate in Access and Resource Sharing department functions, including participation in departmental policy discussions, professional development, and support of other functional working groups of the department.
  • Perform work assigned in the support of other units in the department including Interlibrary Loan, Carnegie Library and other service desks in the Libraries.
  • Utilize RFID technology to assist in physical inventory projects, including searching for lost, claims returned, or missing books.
  • Assist in special projects as needed and requested.
  • Read, understand, and apply the policies, procedures, and protocols for Interlibrary Loan of the American Library Association, OCLC, and Syracuse University Libraries.
  • Knowledge of current resource sharing practices.
  • General understanding of copyright laws and guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned based on fluctuating needs and workflows of working group and department.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS :
  • Associate’s degree and at least 4 years of library or related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat and demonstrated capabilities creating, editing, downloading, and uploading electronic files.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in searching databases and verifying content.
  • Experience with ILLiad, OCLC, and/or other combinations of bibliographic management and/or resource sharing systems.
  • Strong customer service skills and commitment to proving service effectively in a diverse environment.
  • Ability to use necessary library materials, bibliographic materials, and office equipment.
  • Attention to detail demonstrated capacity for carrying out tasks in an accurate and timely manner, and ability to check own work for accuracy.
  • Experience with MS Office, Access, Internet, email.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize tasks and perform effectively in a fast-paced environment with a fluctuating workload and frequent distractions and interruptions.
  • Ability to work as a team player, thrive in a team-based environment, and skilled in fostering teamwork among others.
  • Data manipulation skills including consolidating, manipulating, interpreting, and reporting.
Responsibilities
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE :

In addition to the knowledge, skills and abilities required for a Library Technician III, the following knowledge skills and abilities may also be required for a Library Technician IV, depending on the area of assignment:
  • Perform original cataloging or complex copy cataloging and classification for a variety of materials and formats
  • Identify gaps in policies and procedures and may prepare draft policies and procedures for review
  • Exercise independent judgment in making financial decisions related to the acquisitions, accounting, and receiving of Library materials
  • Interact with researchers; negotiate and analyze research questions and determine most appropriate resource(s) to address the question; construct complex research strategies to facilitate patron research
  • Use numerous complex research resources such as online catalogs and databases, finding aids, reference sources, technical manuals, etc. to perform job responsibilities
  • Develop and manage departmental projects and may identify related staffing needs
  • Create authority records in Library automated systems
  • Create and add advanced, complex records to the Library automated systems, e.g. complex holdings records
  • Create finding aids for archival materials
  • Represent the Library in donor transactions regarding collections
  • Interact with researchers and provide consultation on appropriate technologies to accomplish research goals.
  • Track, compile, analyze, and interpret non-financial statistics
  • Apply complex preservation and special conservation treatments
  • Using independent judgment, select appropriate formats and technologies, perform complex reformatting of items for preservation treatment
Physical Requirements
  • Daily repetitive motion, sitting, standing, stooping, lifting up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to push cart filled with library books up to 80 pounds and move tables and chairs.
Tools/Equipment
  • Operate computers, scanners, printers, and copiers.
  • Operate digital copiers/scanners for digital scanning and delivery of library materials
  • Operate computers and peripheral equipment
