Executive Director of Military Education
The Pierce College District is seeking an innovative and entrepreneurial Executive Director of Military Education who can take Military Education Programs to the next level. The Executive Director reports to the President of Pierce College Fort Steilacoom and provides leadership and supervision for Military Education programs across the district. This individual will have the skills necessary to identify new and expanding markets to grow enrollments through innovative and active recruitment methods; explore and develop partnerships with local and national military installations and colleges and universities; supervise a talented
and committed staff; manage and oversee all elements of program operations including budget development and monitoring; compliance with federal regulations related to military students; admissions and registrations for military students; and supervision of the military related events and local and national partnerships.

Join the team that was ranked by Military Times in 2021 as the #1 community college in the nation and the top school in the Northwest!  Pierce College at Joint Base Lewis-McChord has been serving the military community since 1967 and is fully committed to providing direct educational services that meet the needs of our military-connected community.  We operate with a team of 20 FT staff/administrators, 4 FT faculty and a cadre of part-time faculty who have a passion for serving with equity-minded excellence.  With offices located at Fort Lewis in the Stone Education Center, and on McChord Field in the McChord Education Center, our teams are embedded in the JBLM community and ready to provide quality services and instruction to our servicemembers and their families.  
 
Our primary focus is on serving active-duty personnel and their family members, with capacity to also serve a large population of veterans and civilian students who enjoy the quality and flexibility of our course offerings.  Our classrooms are enriched by a diverse student population located around the world, who benefit from a robust schedule of online classes, as well as in-person options. Our top programs of interest are pre-nursing/healthcare, business administration, and preparation for military career advancement.  
 
Due to COVID restrictions, instruction is primarily offered in an online format, with some hybrid/in-person offerings that will continue to expand in the coming terms.  Our staff are working primarily in-person, offering services on a daily basis at our Stone Education Center location, and a partial schedule at our McChord location.  As the COVID situation improves, we will continue to adapt our services to meet the growing need of our community.

Responsibilities of Executive Director include, but are not limited to the following:

Leadership & Supervision: Provide leadership and supervision for Pierce College at JBLM, Including approximately 25 full-time staff and faculty and 70 adjunct faculty and part-time staff. Promote professional development and foster a results-oriented culture which cultivates innovation, superb customer service, and academic excellence. Provide overall program personnel supervision Including recruitment, training, evaluating, scheduling, and discipline. Ensure delivery of in-class and online educational programs, plus a full array of student enrollment and advising services to over 8,500 military-affiliated enrollments per year. Actively support and engage In Pierce College's equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts In order to provide access, support, and success for our diverse community of learners.
 
Strategic Planning & Budget: Responsible for setting the vision and developing an innovative, entrepreneurial program strategy with viable cost structures. Identifies new business and revenue-generating opportunities, and supports new initiatives to increase enrollments and/or improve delivery of services and educational programs. Creates new partnerships and agreements with military-affiliated education, transition, and veterans organizations, businesses, institutions, and agencies. Develops and manages program budget and expenditures of over $8 million.
 
Outreach & Recruitment: Works collaboratively with Marketing & Communications to develop marketing strategies and recruiting activities for new military-affiliated students. oversees associated contracts. Hosts visits to Pierce College at JBLM and supports on- and off-campus events and projects relating to military-affiliated populations. Represents Pierce College's military-affiliated educational programs within the District, community, and nationally with DoD personnel, professional organizations, the State Board, commissions and other agencies; attends community meetings and boards. Fosters relationship with host education centers.
 
Administration: Oversees compliance with college, State, federal, and DoD policies, procedures and regulations, including host Education Center and DoD memorandums of understanding, Keeps District and staff informed of changes in policies and procedures.
 
Council & Committee Work: Serves and represents military-affiliated students on District teams, committees and councils as appropriate or assigned.

Contribution to Community: Responds to requests and participates in volunteer activities as a representative of Pierce College.

 

 Qualifications: Required Education:
  • Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution.
Required Experience:
  • Five (5) years of progressive leadership responsibilities administering educational programs.
Special Requirements and/or Conditions of Employment:
  • The successful candidate must consent to and pass a criminal background check after a conditional offer of employment.  Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicants' suitability to perform in this position.
  • As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must have the ability to obtain and maintain access to Department of Defense facilities.
  • Must maintain vehicle registration, vehicle insurance and driver's license to use vehicle on the military installation.

    Terms of Employment:
    This is a 12-month, full-time (40 hours per week) administrative-exempt position with Pierce College District. The primary work location will be at Pierce College at Joint Base Lewis McChord but frequent travel to Pierce College campuses or sites may occur. Work hours are between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00p.m. Monday through Friday with occasional evenings and weekends as required. This position maybe subject to reassignment between campuses or sites.

    Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Your paycheck is just part of the total compensation package.     Physical Work Environment:
    This position works indoors in an office environment. During this time, core staff approved by their supervisors to come onto campus are covered by a safety plan that follows social distancing and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) protocols. This includes minimizing close contact by limiting time on campus; conducting meetings virtually; and implementing other creative strategies to reduce the density of employees on campus to keep everyone safe.
