College of Communication and Information – Full Time – The University of Tennessee, College of Communication and Information seeks to fill a non-tenure track (NTT), Assistant Professor of Practice position to begin August 1, 2022, on a 3-year, renewable contract. The position is a joint appointment with the School of Advertising and Public Relations and the School of Journalism and Electronic Media and will teach in the asynchronous online master’s program. This is a 9-month position with opportunities for optional summer teaching.
ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities include teaching online graduate level courses
(4/4 load). Course assignments may include any of the courses
listed above or other special topics courses as
needed.
Applicants should have the requisite classroom or applied
experience to teach these courses. Recent relevant industry
experience is highly desired.
The School, College, and University of Tennessee
The salary for the position is competitive and commensurate with experience. The University of Tennessee enrolls approximately 28,000 students at its Knoxville campus. UT is Tennessee’s only public Carnegie Doctoral/Research Extensive University and is currently ranked among the nation’s Top 50 public universities. The College of Communication and Information consists of four schools: The School of Advertising and Public Relations, the School of Communication Studies, the School of Journalism and Electronic Media, and the School of Information Sciences. The College includes approximately 1,300 majors and enrolls more than 5,800 students per semester. The College has an active research faculty supported by the Center for Information and Communication Studies. The center involves dozens of researchers from across disciplines and across agency borders to focus the array of talent at the University of Tennessee, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and other research institutions.
The School of Advertising and Public Relations includes 12
full-time faculty members who engage in quantitative and
qualitative research with the goal of advancing public relations
and advertising theory and informing practice. The school offers
course work at both the graduate and undergraduate level. The
School includes approximately 420 undergraduate majors and 35 MS
and doctoral students. The School participates in the College–wide
M.S. and Ph.D. programs.
The School of Journalism and Electronic Media includes 17 full-time
faculty members that work to prepare students for a career in
broadcasting, print media, photojournalism, production and/or new
media. The school offers course work at both the graduate and
undergraduate level as well as experiences in student-led media
organizations and global studies. The School also participates in
the College–wide M.S. and Ph.D. programs.
The Online Strategic and Digital Communication master’s
concentration offers an interdisciplinary curriculum of digitally
focused skills and trends in advertising, public
relations, journalism, information sciences, and communication
studies. Our program is grounded
in research about the skillset needed to be an
effective communicator in the ever-evolving digital
landscape and is built on the latest methods
and knowledge.

We seek a colleague that is knowledgeable about digital
communication best practices and emerging trends with expertise in
advertising, journalism and electronic media, and public relations.
The ability to teach in one or more of the following areas is
strongly desired:
Digital Content Creation, Audience Analytics, Global Communication,
Social Media, Strategic Communication, and Communication
Management.
A Ph.D. at the time of the appointment with a concentration in
advertising, public relations, journalism and electronic media or
equivalent and evidence of excellence in teaching online courses
are required. Professional experience is preferred.
