Mission or Goal of Unit:

The mission of the Division of Acute Care Surgical Services in the Department of Surgery is the advancement of science through research and the training of undergraduate and graduate students in our discipline. The Department fosters a level of research and professional activity essential to the graduate and to the professional growth of the faculty. The Division provides junior faculty with clinical and research experiences that prepare them for their professional careers. The Division is committed to enhance diversity among its faculty, staff, and students. Finally, faculty have a responsibility to provide service to their profession and to the university community.

Chief Purpose of this position:

This position is a junior, term, nontenure track faculty position in the area of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care and Acute General Surgery. The faculty member should have clinical interests that complement and expand existing expertise in the Division. Research areas of particular interest include (but are not limited to) investigation of existing practice management guidelines and their effect on outcomes, Modification of existing PMG based on evidence as well as laboratory research. The faculty member will also support the division with teaching responsibilities at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Position Responsibilities:

Teaching
Clinical instructor will have teaching responsibilities as a part of their role in an academic medical center setting. Oversight of residents and fellows as well as instruction in trauma, EGS, surgical critical care to include weekly surgical case discussion of
complex operative cases

Clinical
Faculty member clinical responsibility will be in the care of the trauma and acute care patients on the MCV campus of VCU as well as other community hospitals where coverage is provided. He/she will be responsible for the development of an
active surgical practice, with the support of the Division and Department’s leadership. In addition to division clinical responsibilities the focus of the clinical instructor will be for board-eligible surgeons to receive extensive training in operative management of trauma and EGS patients

Research

Faculty member may participate in research activities and/or collaborate with others on research projects and endeavours

Required Qualifications:
  • Board Certification or Eligibility in General Surgery.
  • Fellowship in Trauma or Surgical Critical Care
  • Commitment to laboratory and/or Clinical Research
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level
  • Record of external funding or proposal submissions to obtain funding.
