Position Description

The Department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences at San José State University seeks qualified candidates for a full-time, tenure-track, Assistant/Associate Professor position. We highly encourage candidates to apply with specialization in any of the following areas including, but not limited to: Child Language and Literacy (Development & Disorders), Articulation/Phonology, Speech Science, School-based Speech-Language Pathology, Adult Neurogenic Speech and Language Disorders, and Swallowing Disorders.

This dynamic and diverse department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences houses among the first Speech-Language Pathology graduate programs in California and values scholarly research, pedagogical innovation, student and community engagement, and clinical practice that is equity-minded, culturally responsive, and centers the rights of persons with disabilities. The Department enrolls about 250 students in its B.A. (in CDS) and M.S. programs, houses the on-campus Kay Armstead Center for Communicative Disorders (KACCD), and multiple faculty research labs. The CDS department is one of seven departments in the Lurie College of Education , committed to preparing transformative therapists while striving to be community engaged, interdisciplinary, culturally sustaining, and holistic in its work.

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or other doctoral degree in Communicative Disorders and Sciences, Speech Language Hearing Sciences, or closely related field by the time of the appointment – ABD also will be considered.
  • Demonstrated commitment to scholarly activity and ability to articulate a clear research agenda
  • Demonstrated ability or potential to teach effectively in undergraduate and graduate speech-language pathology programs
  • Demonstrated commitment to culturally sustaining, evidence-based, and person-centered academic and/or clinical teaching
  • Awareness of and equity-minded orientation towards the educational goals of a diverse student body as might have been gained in cross-cultural study/training, teaching, scholarship, collaboration or other comparable experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Priority will be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following:
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in Speech-Language Pathology or Eligibility for California licensure in Speech-Language Pathology
  • Record of successful teaching, research, and/or clinical practice in diverse contexts in speech-language pathology
  • Demonstrated ability or potential to teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate speech-language pathology students, with priority for candidates with experience working in a minority-serving institution

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Communicative Disorders and Sciences (in select areas of expertise), and possibly supervise students in specialty clinics (as part of practicum)
  • Develop and sustain an ongoing record of research, scholarship, creative activity, and professional engagement
  • Participate in departmental activities including curriculum development, accreditation preparation, and program planning review
  • Participate in shared governance, at department, college and university levels (as appropriate)
  • Demonstrate awareness of and some experience with responding to the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, heritage language and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, instructional strategies, mentoring, and proactive advising

Conditional Offer

The work for this faculty position is located in the State of California. Employment is contingent upon proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
