ATTENTION:

The Department of University Housing in the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater seeks a Assistant Director of Residence Life (Student Affairs Asst Dir (B), AE122)

Academic staff positions are provided fixed term appointments with annual renewals unless otherwise noted. Reappointment for subsequent terms is dependent upon performance, university funding and external forces.

JOB DETAILS:

Supervise Complex Directors, one graduate assistant, a student intern, and subordinate staff in designated area. Responsible for the advising of the Residence Hall Association (RHA). Coordinate the overall management of the residence hall front desks. Work with other aspects of community development with staff and students and coordinate several educational initiatives. This position will also coordinate many of University Housing’s Equity and Inclusion initiatives such as coordinate the Diversity Advocate program, including selecting, training and supervising the DA’s, as well as coordinating the diversity related program curriculum, and the Global Village. This position is directly supervised by the Director of Residence Life and is a live-off position. This position requires some evening and weekend work.

Supervision Received: Supervision is received from the Director of Residence Life.

Supervision Exercised: Functional and/or administrative supervision is exercised over several Complex Directors, as well as employees under the supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling, Communications or related field
  • Four years, full-time experience in housing/residence life or related field
Desired Characteristics:
  • Prior residence life/housing experience and RHA or student organization advising
  • A demonstrated commitment to social justice, ability to work with diverse groups of people, enthusiasm, organizational skills, perseverance, humor and tact
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills
  • Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Supervise Complex Directors (and indirectly supervise subordinate staff) in a designated residence hall area.
  2. Supervise the Residential Learning Advisor, a graduate assistant.
  3. Coordinate the various operations of the designated residence hall area.
  4. Serve as a direct source of communication between individual residence hall complexes and central staff.
  5. Oversee crisis intervention responses in the designated residence hall area.
  6. Advise and/or supervise the advisors for the Residence Hall Association (RHA).
  7. Responsible for the overall management of twelve residence hall front desks.
  8. Coordinate the Community Living Agreement program.
  9. Responsible for the Roommate Agreement process.
  10. Select, train, and supervise the Diversity Advocates.
  11. Coordinate the Hate/Bias response protocol for University Housing.
  12. Coordinate the Global Village including serving as the primary contact with Global Experiences in supporting our international students.
  13. Coordinate University Housing’s Gender Inclusive Housing initiatives.
  14. Coordinate University Housing’s Wellness Housing program.
  15. Coordinate University Housing’s Substance Free Housing program
  16. Coordinate University Housing’s Quiet Lifestyle Housing program.
  17. Coordinate the Welcome Team program.
  18. Coordinate the Global Village including serving as the primary contact with Center for Global Education in supporting our international students.
  19. Coordinate University Housing’s Rainbow floor initiative.
  20. Central Staff contact for the Assistant Complex Directors in their supervision of front desk assistants.
  21. Coordinates all recruiting, hiring, training, and discipline of approximately 120 undergraduate front desk assistants.
  22. Implements and enforces security protocols for residence hall lock changes and key replacements.
  23. Work with any community development tools and models, for Resident Assistants and for students.
  24. Oversee alcohol educational efforts in the residence halls.
  25. Select, train, coordinate and supervise the Alcohol & Other Drug Peer Educators.
  26. Participate in the overall administration of University Housing by serving on committees, attending staff meetings, representing the office as requested, cooperatively assisting colleagues, and assisting with financial management.
  27. Will be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills
  28. Perform other duties that may be assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting annual salary within a range of $57,000– $60,000.
