College of the Sequoias is seeking an equity-minded candidate to fill a full-time, tenure-track position in the Automotive Technology Department beginning August 2022.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching Automotive classes including electric and hybrid vehicle repair.

The successful candidate will work with current faculty to determine automotive subject areas, but may be expected to instruct in safety, OSHA standards, shop skills, hand tools, mathematics, automotive electrical systems, and engine systems. In addition, the professor may provide instruction in automatic transmissions, powertrains, suspension and steering, brakes, air conditioning, engine performance, emissions and diagnostics, and demonstrate the ability to enhance student learning through the use of learning laboratory (hands-on lessons).

Assignments may include evening classes, weekend classes, online, and teaching at our locations in Visalia, Hanford, and/or Tulare. Participation in the governance of the District by way of committee assignments is expected. Other responsibilities include maintenance of a number of office hours, full participation in departmental responsibilities, and the willingness to create and/or participate in and sustain an atmosphere of equity, justice, and appreciation for diversity throughout the college.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

The candidate must meet one of the following criteria. The degree must generally be from an institution accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges or the equivalent.
  • Any Bachelor's degree or higher, and two years of related occupational experience OR
  • Any Associate degree, and six years of related occupational experience OR
  • The equivalent (Download PDF reader) AND
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic social, economic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
    • Training and practical experience in all aspects of the automotive repair profession, including electrical and hybrid auto repair/maintenance.

    Desirable Qualifications:

    The Automotive Technology Department is looking for evidence of the following:

  • ASE Certified or willing and capable of gaining certification.
  • A strong foundation in automotive electrical circuits, test equipment, and diagnostic strategies.
  • Evidence of the ability to involve students in practical applications of instruction as it is related to the industry.
  • Experience working with students of various cultural, economic and educational backgrounds.
  • Successful experience teaching students of ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Evidence of an ability to address the needs of diverse and frequently underprepared student populations taking a wide range of college level courses.
  • Evidence of the ability to use a variety of teaching strategies and assessment methods that encourage retention while successfully challenging a diverse student population.
  • Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole.
  • Ability to effectively engage with and facilitate authentic learning for students of diverse backgrounds, cultures and experiences.
  • Knowledge and experience in the development and assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Commitment to professional growth as an educational professional.
  • Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Membership in relevant professional organizations.
