About the Opportunity

Northeastern University School of Law is seeking to hire one or more individuals for a full-time, non-tenure track faculty role that involves teaching within our Legal Skills in Social Context Program. This is a one- to five-year benefits-eligible position to teach legal research, writing, and professional skills in the first year Legal Skills in Social Context Program (LSSC). LSSC, the only program of its kind in the country, is the cornerstone of the first-year curriculum at Northeastern. Designed to enhance law students' skills development through social justice lawyering, the course is comprised of two parts: a traditional legal research and writing component and a social justice research project. The benefits of the program for students are numerous: students learn and develop a wide array of essential lawyering skills and have an opportunity to immediately apply their skills and put them to use in support of people in need.

Applications will be reviewed upon receipt and the search will continue until the position is filled. More information regarding this position can be obtained by contacting the search administrator, Willamina Hadley, at m.hadley@northeastern.edu, or the faculty chair of the appointments committee, Stephanie Hartung at s.hartung@northeastern.edu.

In making faculty appointments, the School of Law seeks to enhance its innovative curriculum, which combines experiential learning with rigorous analytical training and interdisciplinarity.

Northeastern University has a strong tradition of diversity and accessibility. The search committee is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching, and/or service. We encourage applications from racial and ethnic minorities, persons with disabilities and members of the LGBTQ community. We also encourage applicants to share how their background and experience will contribute to the Northeastern community.

We continue to enthusiastically welcome nominations and applications from members of groups that have been underrepresented in academia. Successful candidates will have demonstrated commitment to fostering diverse and inclusive environments as well as to promoting experiential learning, which are central to a Northeastern University education.

Responsibilities:

LSSC Faculty are responsible for teaching two sections of the course, including supervising each section's work on a year-long social justice project with a non-profit organization. Depending on programmatic needs, these sections may include sections offered in the school's Flex JD program, which is a part-time, partially virtual and partially in-person program.

Qualifications:

Applicants must hold a JD or comparable degree from an accredited institution by the appointment start date (e.g. JD, LLB or foreign equivalent). Candidates must have expertise in teaching legal research, writing, and lawyering skills as well as a demonstrated commitment to using law as a means for advancing social justice.

Demonstrated success in a legal practice setting preferred. Expertise using experiential teaching techniques as well as teaching online is also preferred.
