The Art and Design Program at Portland Community College is seeking a full-time instructor in Music and Sonic Arts effective August 21,2022 beginning the 2022/2023 academic year. The Art and Design Program comprises eight (8) departments/areas of study:

● Architecture

● Art

● Graphic Design

● Interior Design

● Music

● Music and Sonic Arts

● Multimedia

● Theater Arts

Music and Sonic Arts is a program unique in the state, region, and nation. This position requires knowledge and applied experience in contemporary electronic and experimental music composition techniques, historical music composition techniques, MaxMSP, interactive media, and the profound social, cultural, and economic influence of digital art creations, with particular attention to social justice and equity for people who have historically been oppressed.

  • Ability to teach at least two of the following Music and Sonic Arts courses: MUC 270/271 Audio Programming, MUC 218 Digital Arts and Equity, MUC 200 A/B/C Composition, MUC 219 Sonic Constructions of Identity. See the department course catalog for more information:

  • Ability to work with a diverse academic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff, and community
  • The program is looking for a candidate who adapts teaching practices to include a wide range of cultural knowledge, experiences, and perspectives, especially from historically untapped communities.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work collegially, creatively and collaboratively at the department/program/campus/college levels
  • Significant experience with MaxMSP
  • Applies instructional expertise and a deep understanding of Culturally Responsive Education theory and praxis to improve the effectiveness of curriculum and instruction
Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).
  • Master’s degree in Music Education, Performance, Composition, or Production, Audio Engineering, Sound Design, Sonic Arts, Creative Media Arts, New Media, Interactive Arts and Technology, Interactive Technology, Interaction Design, Experience Design, Creative Coding, Computer Science or related field
  • T hree (3) years experience as a performer, sound artist, new media artist, composer, engineer, producer or sound designer
OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in one of the areas above
  • F our (4) years experience
OR
  • Associate’s degree in one of the areas above
  • Five (5) years experience
  • One of the following
    • 30 hours of lower- or upper-division post-secondary education in equity, inclusion, and/or social justice; or
    • 30 hours of certificated training in equity, inclusion or social justice; or
    • 30 hours of paid employment with an agency or organization with a published mission commitment to equity, inclusion or social justice
OR

Demonstrated competency: For education and/or experience not listed here, the Program Dean, in consultation with the Faculty Department Chair, will make a recommendation to the Associate Vice President for Academic and Career Pathways which is subject to approval by the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

*Because this list may not include all possible subject areas, the Program Dean, in consultation with the Faculty Department Chair, will make a recommendation to the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs regarding specific qualifying degrees.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive teaching
  • Arduino/microcontroller sensor experience and knowledge
  • Working understanding of integrating multiple software and hardware components using MIDI, DMX and OSC
  • At least three (3) years of experience as a performer, sound artist, new media artist, composer, or sound designer or At least three (3) years of experience building interactive media installations
Starting Salary Expectations Initial Salary Placement will be up to Step 3 ($62,665) based on related experience, per PCC's collective bargaining agreement. Position Grade Salary Range $58780 to $99564 Annual Salary FTE 1 PCC Benefits

PCC currently funds the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP) pension and contributes an additional 6% into the employee's Individual Account Program under PERS/OPSRP. A portion of the 6% will be diverted to The Employee Pension Stability Account as mandated by Senate Bill 1049. PCC offers a tax deferred annuity program and a deferred compensation program where employees may save additional pre-tax dollars for retirement.

Additionally, PCC provides a tuition waiver for courses offered at PCC for yourself, domestic partner, and dependent children under 24 years of age; plus partial tuition reimbursement for yourself at other accredited institutions.

* Please note: Temporary Full-Time Faculty are not eligible for Personal Leave Days, Life Insurance, Long-term Disability, or AD&D Insurance.

Paid Leave:
  • 1 day of sick leave for every 18 days worked (~10 per year)
  • 21 hours of additional personal leave per year
  • 4 paid holidays (which occur during the term you are teaching)

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Instructors shall have earned required academic credentials at a regionally accredited US institution or a foreign institution having the equivalent of regional accreditation.

Instructors with credentials from other countries will have their transcripts evaluated by agencies that have good standing with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services to establish fulfillment of this standard.
