Position Description

Since its inception in 1996, the Virginia Commonwealth University College of Engineering has brought innovative, real-world engineering education to Central Virginia. Comprised of five different departments plus the Dean’s office, the College of Engineering enrolls more than 1,700 undergraduate and 250 graduate students in several degree programs supported by approximately 530 full-time, part-time, and student employees.

The Dean’s Office within the College invites applications for a Specialist IT I. In support of the College mission, this
position is integral to providing general operational and audio-visual support for the use of instructional hardware and
software in remote and local classrooms, AV event support and IT department administrative support. This includes:
  • Support technology operations for AV spaces
  • Trouble-shoot and do preventative maintenance
  • Manage AV spaces, parts and supplies
  • Support College events
  • Provide consulting

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Working knowledge or experience with audio-video recording and playback systems, computer projection systems, audio-video switching systems, and web/video streaming technologies.
  • Knowledge and experience with basic systems troubleshooting, and equipment maintenance.
  • Must be mechanically dexterous, good at working with hands, lift weights up to 50 pounds, work on ladders.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications such as PowerPoint, Excel and Word.
  • Good organizational and communication skills are required.
  • Flexible with schedule to provide support for evening and weekend events. This is estimated at no more than one evening or weekend event per month on average (twelve events per year).

  • Must have very strong customer service skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Good interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to work with people; self motivated.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing with both technical and non-technical persons.
  • Ability to work on various projects at any one time, solve problems as they come up using a wide variety of technologies
    and complete an assigned task on time.
  • Associate’s degree in media production, instructional technology, information systems, or a related field or equivalent
    experience preferred.
Salary Range: $40,000 - $48,000
