FACULTY POSITION IN Engineering risk and reliability of infrastructure systems AT FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY (FIU) - MIAMI, FLORIDA

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Florida International University invites applicants for a tenured/tenure-track track open-rank (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor) position in Engineering Risk and Reliability. Qualified senior candidates may be considered for tenured positions.

The Department is seeking highly qualified candidates who focus on the area of Engineering risk and reliability of infrastructure systems to quantify and improve the resilience under various uncertain demands. One of the major areas of interest is civil infrastructure, including – but not limited to – the analysis of engineering risks and reliability of infrastructure systems across multiple scales (from single building or bridge to a community scale), the interconnectivity and interdependency of networked systems, statistical and machine learning methods in engineering risk and reliability analysis, probabilistic loads from extreme stressors on coastal communities under climate variability and change, probabilistic methods for large-scale systems, reliability-based decision-making in design, analysis and improved reconstruction of infrastructure, and systems-based engineering. Candidates pursuing research at the interface of multiple CEE areas (structural, wind, geotechnical, environmental, water resources and transportation engineering) are highly desirable and are expected to break the silos and create new opportunities for interdisciplinary teamwork and multidisciplinary research proposals.

A demonstrated potential or record of teaching and mentoring students in ‘risk and reliability’ and courses that complement the CEE undergraduate and graduate curricula, including the development of new enriching courses, is expected. The successful candidates, through integrated research and teaching endeavors, will contribute to modernizing the curriculum with new topics and trends in the candidate’s research area. For example, candidates may develop risk and reliability analysis courses that can address the major challenges in South Florida and beyond under the impact of climate change. Candidates who can educate CEE students with artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) in the risk and reliability analysis from ‘the CEE perspective’ will be a plus.

The candidate will have the chance to integrate and collaborate with CEE’s several major research centers and laboratories that offer unparalleled collaborative research opportunities including the Wall of Wind (WOW) that is an NSF Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) Experimental Facility (EF), the Accelerated Bridge Construction University Transportation Center (ABC-UTC) – an US DOT Tier 1 UTC, the Wind Hazard and Infrastructure Performance Center (WHIP) – an NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC), the Lehman Center of Transportation Research (LCTR), and the Titan America Structures and Construction Testing Laboratory. The FIU College of Engineering and Computing is expanding its impact in the four thrust areas (i) infrastructure and resiliency, (ii) information technology and security, (iii) health, and (iv) clean energy. The Department plays a leading role in the FIU’s two Preeminent Programs – the Institute for Resilient and Sustainable Coastal Infrastructure (InteRaCt) and the Extreme Events Institute (EEI). This unique research environment will allow for effective collaborations with other faculty across the university.

The candidates must have an earned doctoral degree in Civil, Environmental Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline. Evidence of research / scholarship is required. Industrial experience and/or experience of collaboration with industry partners is a plus. Registration as a Professional Engineer in Florida (or the ability to obtain such licensure within four years of employment) is preferred. Responsibilities will include teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the civil engineering curriculum, directing graduate students, and establishing an externally funded research program in the area of expertise.

Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply to Job Opening ID 525889 at https://facultycareers.fiu.edu and submit a single file pdf that includes:

  • Cover letter
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Statement of research experience and interests (up to 2 pages)
    • Applicants are encouraged to include a plain-language research statement summary appropriate for the general public as part of the research statement so that non-experts can properly understand the importance of the candidate’s research.
  • Statement of teaching experience and interests (up to 2 pages)
  • Statement of diversity and inclusion (up to 2 pages)
  • A list of names and contact information of at least 3 references who will be contacted as determined by the search and screen committee.

To receive full consideration, applications should be received by February 22, 2022. Reviews may continue until the positions are filled.
