Visual Designer/Public Information Representative

This position serves as a visual lead for communications and marketing efforts across the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) at Oregon State University. This role helps oversee the development and execution of cohesive communications across the college through close collaboration with CLA’s communications and marketing team. Working directly with CLA’s marketing and communications team, this position supports overarching strategic communications goals and aligns with efforts across the college. Further, this role serves as the liaison for the School of Visual, Performing and Design Arts, School of Communication, School of Language, Culture and Society and School of Writing, Literature and Film, working to incorporate and reflect the individual strengths and personality of each school into visual language and communications.

As a creative visual designer for the college, this position ensures visual consistency across the college and alignment between the schools, college and the university. Beyond design, this position helps set a distinctive style for photography assets, manages video documentation of events and upholds the integrity of the visual brand elements across print and digital communications and marketing efforts.

POSITION DUTIES
50% Digital and Printed Communication (Graphic Design and Visual Oversight, Writing, Website and Social Media)
Develops and creates college communications and marketing materials. This includes developing visual language and style to support, enhance and align the CLA brand and expanding the communications toolkit for CLA through a suite of templates for use across the college. It includes creation of event-specific concepts and supporting materials including posters, flyers, digital ads, social media updates and mailers. It also includes college-wide promotions, college recruitment materials, and materials to support key schools within the college. Produces original web and printed media content that meets OSU branding guidelines.

Supports the development of CLA website and collaborates with core college team to reflect the priorities and vision for the effort. Assists with minor and day-to-day updates to ensure the website and social media properties remains relevant and timely.

40% Photography and Videography
Supports the establishment a consistent photo style for CLA, curates images from across the college and develops a photography library for use across publications and communications. Photographs key events and takes profile photos of lecturers, faculty and students for website, events, web stories, promotional material and programs. Documents key CLA events through video, as needed, and helps produce promotional videos for programs and events. Oversees editing and publishing of key event videos to the college’s channels for documentation and future reference.

5% Lead Work for student employees
Works directly with multimedia-focused student workers, interns and independent contractors.

5% Assists as necessary with school and college events
Supports the team with preparation for or execution at key events, as specific needs arise.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Three years of experience as a representative for an organization which involved gathering information, writing and/or producing materials, presenting information to the public, handling public relations, preparing press releases, and interaction with the news media. At least one year of this experience must have involved participating in planning and administering an organization’s public relations program. A Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or a closely-related field may substitute for up to two years of the general experience but will not substitute for the one year of specialized experience.

Knowledge of graphic design principles; experience designing and creating posters, flyers, and other print media using Adobe Creative Suite or similar software.

Strong writing and editing skills, and excellent verbal communication skills; experience in marketing and public relations; ability to meet firm timelines for project completion; and an ability to interact effectively with the public.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
An ability to keep current and an interest in advancements in technology and innovations in marketing in digital and social media platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Twitter, etc.

Experience with web content management platforms such as Drupal or similar systems; experience creating, designing, and updating web pages. Experience with video editing software.
