The University of California, Santa Barbara (UC Santa Barbara) invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Engineering (COE). Situated in a stunning coastal setting and considered one of the top engineering schools in the nation, the COE is renowned for its talented faculty and students, its interdisciplinary research emphasis, and its excellence across academic programs. Reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor, the Dean will lead this high-performing engineering school into a new era of continued excellence and focused growth.

 

UC Santa Barbara is widely acclaimed for its excellence in academic programs: for 2022, U.S. News and World Report ranked UC Santa Barbara 5th among all public universities in the nation; seven UC Santa Barbara graduate programs rank among the top 50 in the nation, and three departments are in the top 10. In addition, it is home to 11 national centers and institutes, eight of which are sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF). In the 2020-2021 academic year, UC Santa Barbara enrolled approximately 22,000 undergraduate and 3,000 graduate students. With only five colleges and professional schools, it offers the benefits of a premier research university with a focus on an intimate undergraduate learning experience. In 2015, UC Santa Barbara was designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution and as an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution. The College of Engineering enrolls approximately 1,600 undergraduate and 750 graduate students. It comprises five Departments (Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering) and three Programs (Biological Engineering, Computer Engineering, Technology Management and Media Arts & Technology). For 2022, U.S. News and World Report ranks the UC Santa Barbara COE 26th overall in the nation, tied with Harvard, and 14th among public institutions. The materials and chemical engineering departments rank in the top 10 among both public and private institutions. The COE has a strong focus on cross-disciplinary approaches; faculty work collaboratively in 26 distinct research centers and institutes in such emerging fields as quantum science, machine learning, energy efficiency, bioengineering, and materials research. Faculty distinctions include three Nobel Prize winners and 36 National Academy members. Among public universities, the COE ranked first in the percentage of eligible junior faculty who received prestigious NSF Early CAREER Awards in the past five years and, for the past 11 years, the COE has been ranked in the top two among public universities in the world for research impact in engineering and physical sciences. The Dean will be responsible for continuing to advance the quality of teaching and research across the COE, while also working externally to raise the college’s profile as one of the top engineering schools in the nation. The successful candidate will be a world-class scholar who will provide the intellectual and visionary leadership of the college. The successful candidate will craft a compelling vision for the future success of the UC Santa Barbara COE, possess a demonstrated track record of fundraising and administrative leadership, provide evidence for a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and serve as an established national and international presence within the broader engineering community.
